As many as 30 Indian wrestlers are going to be compete for the top prize over the next 10 days as the 2019 Wrestling World Championships get underway from Saturday, 14 September in Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan.
India's top grappler Bajrang Punia has been handed the number one seeding in the men's 65kg freestyle category and is the country’s best hope for a gold medal, specially after he missed out in the last edition, settling for a silver. He had won a bronze in the 60 kg category in the 2013 edition.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar remains India's only gold medallist at the Worlds. He had climbed on top of the podium in the 2010 edition.
Among women, India's Seema Bisla has been seeded second in the 50kg. A gold medal at Yasar Dogu Ranking Series has propelled her to number three in the world. There is also the ever-reliable Vinesh Phogat competing in her new 53kg category in which she bagged gold medals at three consecutive tournaments this summer.
