India Eye Third Asia Cup Title

India take on Malaysia in the final of the Hockey Asia Cup in Dhaka on Sunday. Two-time champions India are the higher ranked of the two.

While India has been undefeated in the tournament, Malaysia lost 2-6 to India in the Super 4 match on 19 October.

Malaysians have never won the Asia Cup while India were champions in 2003 and 2007.

India's Starting Eleven

Led by Manpreet Singh, India have announced their starting eleven for the game.

Both teams have sung their national anthems and the final of the 10th men's Asia Cup hockey tournament is set to start.

Ramandeep Scores!

Less than three minutes into the game and Ramandeep Singh scores a field goal for India with the help of teammate SV Sunil.

India's Free Hit

India awarded a free hit for a high ball. However Malaysia ask for a review and claim that the ball hit Sardar Singh’s foot. Since the video umpire says “no advice possible”, Malaysia keep their referral and India get a free hit.

Malaysia Win Penalty Corner

Malaysia win their first penalty corner in the 13th minute of the first quarter. However, the Malaysian player fails to trap the ball and they have lost the opportunity to equalise the score.

End of 1st Quarter

At the end of the first quarter, India lead 1-0 courtesy Ramandeep’s goal in the third minute. While India are yet to win a penalty corner, Malaysia failed to convert the one that they got.

India Win Penalty Corner

India win their first penalty corner of the match. However, Harmanpreet Singh fails to convert it as the Malaysian defender’s stick deflects the ball.

Another Penalty Corner

India win another penalty corner and fail to convert it again as the Malaysian goalkeeper stands his ground.

Sumit gets the rebound, but India are unable to breakdown Malaysia’s defence at the moment.

Field Goal for India!

Akashdeep Singh carries the ball from the midfield and beautifully passes it to Sumit who is running towards the goal on the left flank.

Sumit then passes the ball to Lalit who successfully nets the ball.

India lead 2-0.

2-0 at Half-Time

While both teams are attacking, the Indians have managed to score and Malaysia have not.

Let’s see what happens in the second half of the match.

Goalless Third Quarter

Both Malaysia and India get several chances to score in the third quarter but to no avail. While Malaysia is still looking to score their first goal of the game, India are not content either.

India still lead 2-0 in the hockey Asia Cup final against Malaysia.

Malaysia Win Penalty Corner

Saurabh Tinku obstructs the ball and Malaysia win a penalty corner. However, the ball goes wide of the goal and the score remains 2-0 in India’s favour.

Malaysia Pull One Back

With approximately 11 minutes left on the clock, Malaysia score their first goal of the game courtesy Shahril Saabah.

After the umpire awarded Malaysia the goal, India asked for a referral but the video umpire said there had been no foul.

India lose their referral. The score now reads 2-1, still in India’s favour.

Malaysia win a penalty corner and get a great chance to equalise. However, they fail to convert it.

India Win Asia Cup 2017

India beat Malaysia 2-1 to win their third hockey Asia Cup title. Led by Manpreet Singh, India has won their first Asia Cup in ten years.

Lalit Upadhyay wins the award for the Goal of the Game and Akashdeep Singh is named Man of the Match.

Just about a month before the tournament, former coach Roelant Oltmans was sacked and the senior women’s team coach Sjoerd Marijne took his place. This was India’s first tournament under their new coach.
