“We (Belgium) didn’t win. But all the Belgian players have given us a fantastic World Cup, shown us fantastic football, and given us memorable moments that I’ll tell my grandchildren,” said Alain Baetens at the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi, after his side lost 0-1 to France in the World Cup semi-final.

Not too far way at the French Embassy, supporters sang their anthem ‘La Marseillaise’ as the final whistle went off. One of the supporters there said, “We’re very excited. This is superb news for us. Now we need to finish the work and win the final. We’ll be so happy, like we were 20 years ago (when France last won the World Cup in 1998)”.

Didier Deschamps’ side will be looking to lift the trophy for the second time following their triumph on home soil in 1998.
