A stadium that was once bathed in yellow erupted in cheers as their ‘Thala’ Dhoni walked into the Chepauk pitch to face the Australian bowlers in the first ODI. The crowd cheered continuously, from the time he walked out from the pavilion till he reached the pitch to take position.

The last ODI match Dhoni played in Chennai was in October 2015, against South Africa.

The former Indian team captain, sixth in the line-up, walked in after Kedar Jadhav was caught out for 40 runs.

The stadium clearly went into a frenzy celebrating the return of their Chennai Super Kings’ captain. The team was banned from the IPL for two years in the wake of a spot-fixing and betting scandal.

The CSK and Rajasthan Royals, which also banned following the same scandal, will now return to play in the franchise from the coming season.
