Virat Kohli kept up his brilliant summer form by hitting 103 and helped India set England a world-record target of 521 to win the third Test and clinch the series with two matches to spare.

Nine overs into their run chase, England reached 23-0 at Stumps and still needed 498 runs to complete what would be a highly improbable victory at Trent Bridge. The highest successful run chase in Test history is 418, by West Indies against Australia in 2003. England lead the five-match series 2-0.

Here’s a look at three big stats from Day 3 of the third Test between India and England.

Kohli Goes Past Azharuddin

With Virat Kohli’s 97 and 103 in the ongoing third Test, Virat Kohli took his series aggregate to 440 runs which is the highest by an Indian captain in a Test series in England. Virat broke the record held by Mohammad Azharuddin, who had scored 426 runs in the three-match Test series in England in 1990.

India’s Great Batting Effort

India's second innings in the ongoing Test match in Trent Bridge is the first time the Indian team has managed fifty-plus partnerships for each of the first four wickets in Test matches in England.

Highest Targets Set by India in Tests

The highest-ever total set by India in Tests has been 617 runs. They set the target during the third Test against New Zealand in 2009. Gautam Gambhir starred with the bat in the second innings in that match. The opener scored 167 runs off 257 balls.

The target of 521 runs, which has been set in the third Test against England, ranks third in the highest-ever totals set by India list.
