The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill providing citizenship to non-Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan has sparked allegations of being a communally motivated move by the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.
The Bill was first introduced in the Lok Sabha on 19 July 2016, with an intention to give citizenship to six identified minority communities which have faced "religious persecution" in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh — and the communities are Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis.
This means that these illegal migrants cannot be imprisoned or deported for not having valid documents, for instance, a passport.
