Incessant rainfall since Friday triggered a landslide on NH 39 in Manipur, cutting off the lifeline of the state, the police said.

The landslide which occurred on Saturdayat Makhan area in Senapati district damaged 80 feet of the Imphal-Dimapur NH-39, a senior police officer said.

Dozens of trucks bringing essential commodities from Nagaland and those heading towards Assam from here have been stranded due to the landslide.

In addition, torrential rains caused flash floods in several parts of Imphal town and other low-lying areas disrupting traffic. Water levels of important rivers have also increased.

Acting on the weather report, the state’s Relief and Disaster Management Principal Secretary MH Khan has issued a red alert to all district commissioners of the state to take necessary precautionary measures and advised them to activate 24x7 district control rooms to attend distress calls from the public.

Meanwhile, the Imphal-Dimapur national highway has been totally cut off following a major landslide at Tabio near Makhan village in Senapati district, approximately 30 kms from district headquarters.

Even as efforts to clear the road is going on, all communication and both heavy and light vehicle traffic have been suspended along the national highway that connects the state with the rest of country via Nagaland-Assam.

All trains to the Northeast from rest of the country were cancelled till 20 August due to damages on tracks due to floods in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and Bihar.
