In one of the worst rounds of armed clashes between the security forces and militants in recent years, the gunfight took place in two places in Shopian district and a third spot in Anantnag district in southern Kashmir on Sunday, 1 April. Thirteen terrorists were killed in the encounter, while four civilians lost their lives. Three army jawans were martyred during the battle.

During the gunfight, a large number of civilians poured out of their homes, leading to more mayhem.

At a press conference, J&K DGP SP Vaid called it one of the biggest counter-offensives in recent times against terror groups operating in the Kashmir Valley.

Earlier on Sunday, seven terrorists killed in Shopian’s Dragad have been identified as locals and their bodies have been claimed by their kin. According to army officials, out of the seven terrorists killed, two were involved in the killing of Indian Army Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz.
