YouTube Blocks Russian State-Funded Media

YouTube is blocking access around the world to channels associated with Russian state-funded media, the company said on Friday, 11 March.

"Our Community Guidelines prohibit content denying, minimizing or trivialising well-documented violent events, and we remove content about Russia's invasion in Ukraine that violates this policy," spokesman Farshad Shadloo said, in a statement.

"In line with that, effective immediately, we are also blocking YouTube channels associated with Russian state-funded media, globally," he added.

Air Raid Sirens Across Most Of Ukraine: Reports

Air raid sirens were heard across most Ukrainian cities early on Saturday morning, Reuters reported, quoting local media. The reports asked people to seek shelters.

Sirens were reportedly heard in the capital city of Kyiv, Lviv in Odessa, and Kharkiv, Cherkasy and Sumy.

Western Sanctions Against Russia Could Cause ISS to Crash

Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted, according to AFP.

According to Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions could disrupt the operation of Russian vessels servicing the ISS. As a result, the Russian segment of the station -- which helps correct its orbit -- could be affected, causing the 500-tonne structure to "fall down into the sea or onto land".

Several Humanitarian Corridors Open, Says Ukraine Dy PM

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said on Saturday that several humanitarian corridors including from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia are open, Reuters reported.

Oil Depots Near Kyiv on Fire After Russian Attacks

Local media in Ukraine has reported that two oil depots near Kyiv are on fire after attacks by Russia.

One depot was hit in the town of Vasylkiv, 36 kilometres south of the capital, and another was hit in the village of Kryachky, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Ukraine At 'Turning Point': Zelenskyy as Russians Regroup Near Kyiv

Ukraine is at a turning point in the war with Russian forces appearing to be regroup for a possible assault on Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, as the United States imposed new sanctions on senior Kremlin officials and Russian oligarchs.

With the Russian assault in its third week, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had "already reached a strategic turning point", reported Reuters.

"It is impossible to say how many days we still have (ahead of us) to free Ukrainian land. But we can say we will do it," he said. "We are already moving towards our goal, our victory."

Mosque Housing 80 Civilians in Mariupol Shelled

Russian forces have shelled a mosque in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, where more than 80 adults and children, including Turkish citizens, have taken refuge, Ukraine's foreign ministry said on Saturday.

"The mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxolana (Hurrem Sultan) in Mariupol was shelled by Russian invaders," the foreign ministry said in a tweet. "More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey."

It did not say if there were any people killed or wounded.

Kyiv Calls on Macron, Scholz to Help 'Abducted' Mayor

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the leaders of France and Germany to help secure the release of the mayor of Melitopol who Kyiv says was abducted by invading Russian forces, reported AFP.

“During the night and today we are talking to our partners about the situation with our mayor. Our demand is clear: he must be released immediately... I have already phoned (German) Chancellor Olaf Scholz. I have spoken to (French) President Emmanuel Macron... I will speak to all the necessary people to get our people released,” Zelensky said in a video released by the Ukrainian presidency.

“We expect world leaders to show us how they can influence the situation," he said.

Putin Slams 'Flagrant Violation" of International Humanitarian Law by Ukraine Forces

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday slammed what he said was the "flagrant violation" of international humanitarian law by Ukraine's forces as he held phone talks with the leaders of France and Germany, the Kremlin said, according to AFP.

NATO Boss Says Russia Might Use Chemical Weapons 

Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, has said that Russia may use chemical weapons in Ukraine, a move that would constitute a war crime.

"Now that these false claims have been made, we must remain vigilant because it is possible that Russia itself could plan chemical weapons operations under this fabrication of lies. That would be a war crime", he said, as quoted by The Guardian.

New Mayor Installed in Melitopol

The Russian military has appointed a new mayor in Melitopol following after the alleged kidnapping of Ivan Fedorov, according to CNN and the BBC.

The newly installed mayor is Galina Danilchenko, who used to be a member of the city council, according to a statement by the regional administration.

'Russian Invaders Cannot Conquer Us'

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in another passionate national address on 12 March, asserted that the Russian troops had neither the strength nor the spirit to conquer Ukraine.

"The Russian invaders cannot conquer us. They do not have such strength. They do not have such spirit. They are holding only on violence. Only on terror. Only on weapons, which they have a lot", he said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Russia Attacks Ukrainian Military Base near Lviv

Russian airstrikes, according to BBC, have hit the International Peacekeeping and Security Centre (IPSC) in the Yavoriv district, which is approximately 50km south-west of Lviv.

The Lviv regional military administration and the city's mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, confirmed that the Russian forces had launched 8 missiles.

Anonymous Sends Message to Russian Citizens

The hacktivist group Anonymous published a message designed specifically to reach Russian citizens.

A part of it, according to translations provided by Twitter users and The Guardian, reads, "You are being trapped behind an iron curtain of propaganda, with your government attempting to keep you from being a part of the international conversation, out of fear for what you might find out."

"The regime of Vladimir Putin has been carrying out war crimes with his recent invasion of Ukraine, which has caused a massive refugee crisis and countless deaths. Putin has put the Russian population up as a sacrifice. At this point, the most peaceful way that this conflict could end would be for the people of Russia to rise up against Putin and remove him from power".

PM Modi Chairs High-Level Meeting on India's Security Readiness

In the backdrop of Russia increasing its airstrikes on Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 13 March, conducted a high-level meeting to review India's security readiness, according to ANI news agency.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were some of the senior government officials who attended the meeting, as per government sources.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other senior security officials were also present during the meeting.

Ukraine Says 9 Dead, 57 Wounded in Russian Airstrike

At least nine people were killed and 57 wounded on Sunday, 13 March, when a Russian airstrike hit a large Ukrainian military base near Poland's border, local Ukrainian authorities said.

The airstrike seems to be the westernmost attack of the Russia-Ukraine war as of now.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Says Another Mayor Abducted

After the abduction of Melitopol Mayor Ivan Fyodorov, the mayor of a city in southern Ukraine is the latest victim of the Russian forces, according to Ukraine's foreign minister.

Dymtro Kuleba said that Yevhen Matveyev, the mayor of Dniprorudne, has been "abducted" by Russian war criminals.

Indian Embassy in Ukraine to be Relocated in Poland

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Sunday, 13 March, that "in view of the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Ukraine, including attacks in western parts of the country, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine will be temporarily relocated in Poland", according to the statement posted on the MEA website.

"The situation will be reassessed in the light of further developments", the statement further added.

Death toll in Airstrike on Military Base up to 35

The Russian airstrikes that hit a military training base near Ukraine’s western border with Poland has killed 35 people as of now.

About 125,000 Evacuated Via Humanitarian Corridors

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Sunday that about 125,000 people have been safely evacuated through humanitarian corridors from multiple war zones in the country.

In a video address to the nation, he asserted that the situation in Mariupol was extremely worrying, where 400,000 people are still trapped without water and food.

Getting those people out safely, Zelenskiy said, was a priority for his government.

American Journalist Shot Dead in Ukraine: Report

An American journalist has been shot dead in Irpin in Kyiv, while another has been wounded, medics and witnesses told AFP.

A surgeon volunteering for the Ukrainian territorial defence, Danylo Shapovalov, said Brett Renaud died instantly, and he had treated the other. AFP reporters in Irpin also saw the body of the victim.

Renaud was wearing a New York Times press badge. However, NYTs deputy managing editor Cliff Levy said that Renaud was not on an assignment with the newspaper.

“The Times“ is deeply saddened to learn of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud,” Levy said. “Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker, but he was not on assignment for nytimes in Ukraine.”

An American journalist was shot dead and another wounded on Sunday, 13 March, in Irpin in Kyiv, medics and witnesses told AFP.
