10 Killed, Many Injured in Afghanistan Suicide Attack

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Tuesday, 10 July, killing at least 10 people, government officials said.

Inamullah Miakhel, spokesman for the provincial health department in the eastern city, confirmed the death of 10 people and said that at least four people had been injured.

The attacker detonated his explosives near a fuel station, causing a big fire.

State Will Provide Necessary Protection to Mehul Choksi: CBI

The CBI allegedly told the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) that the state would provide the necessary amount of protection to Mehul Choksi, who is an accused in the alleged Rs 13,578-crore Punjab National Bank scam, which involved his nephew Nirav Modi.

The CBI was responding to Choksi’s plea that there is a law and order breakdown in India and that he was being made a “victim of political offence”, reports The Indian Express.

Tuticorin Violence: HC Directs Madras Govt to Submit Video Evidence

The Madras High Court on Monday, 9 July asked the Tamil Nadu government to furnish a video in its possession, which allegedly showed some anti-Sterlite protesters with petrol bombs during the stir in May. It observed that a CBI probe into the incident would instill confidence in the minds of people.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P T Asha gave the directive during the hearing of petitions seeking a CBI probe into the police firing that went on between 22 and 23 May in Tuticorin, which killed 13 people.

Class 11 Student Stabbed by Senior in Kolkata School

A Class 11 student of Aditya Academy Secondary School, Dum Dum, Kolkata was allegedly stabbed by a Class 12 student, after an argument broke out between the two on Monday, 9 July.

While the victim's condition is reported to be stable, the accused has not been arrested by the police yet.

Gujarat's Jewish Population Gets Religious Minority Status

The Gujarat government has granted religious minority status to the Jewish community in the state.

The GR to this effect was issued on 6 July by the state's Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.

"As religious minority members professing the faith of Judaism, they shall get the religious minority rights envisaged in the Constitution and various acts and rules of the state government," the GR stated.

According to this, the community will get benefits of welfare schemes formulated for religious minority communities within the jurisdiction of Gujarat.

Technical Snag in Delhi Metro's Violet Line Causes Delay

The Delhi Metro’s newest Violet line faced a technical snag during rush hours on Tuesday morning, causing a delay in its services, reports The Times of India.

Following complaints by commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that the delay was caused due to a problem in the line’s signalling system, as a result of which the trains had to be operated on manual mode.

Delhi Court Extends Interim Protection to Chidambarams

A Delhi Patiala Court extended interim protection to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti, till 7 August.

The court’s decision came after it heard both Chidambaram and his son’s plea for anticipatory bail, in their connection with the Aircel-Maxis case.

The Enforcement Directorate, however, filed a detailed reply opposing P Chidambaram's anticipatory bail, saying: "P Chidambaram is evasive in his replies to why the total foreign inflow to the tune of US $ 800 million, was approved by him on 13 March, 2016 deliberately and intentionally without raising any objection."

ED Aims to Seize Several Assets of Vijay Mallya Under New Law

The Enforcement Directorate has put together a list of 10 immovable assets of Vijay Mallya worth close to Rs 2,000 crore, other than deposits and shares amounting to about Rs 10,500 crore, for confiscation under the newly promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, reports The Hindu.

The Supreme Court issued a notice under the Ordinance directing Mallya to appear before it on 27 August. Taking help from the relevant UK authorities to serve Mallya the notice, the ED said that the court could then declare him a fugitive under the Ordinance if he failed to appear and order a confiscation of his assets.

SC to Hear Pleas Seeking Scrapping of Section 377

The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is expected to begin hearing the pleas seeking the scrapping of Section 377 of the IPC, which criminalizes homosexuality on Tuesday, 10 July, ANI reports.

The Supreme Court had upheld the law in December, 2013, overruling a judgment of the Delhi High Court which had decriminalised it.

Encounter Between Terrorists And Security Forces in J&K

Two army soldiers were injured in an encounter, that broke out between terrorists and the security forces in the Kundalan area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian, on Tuesday, 10 July.

ANI reports that about 5 to 6 of the terrorists have been hiding in a house in Shopian’s Kundalan, while civilians living in the nearby areas are being evacuated. According to a press release by Kashmir Window, the injured soldiers were taken to the army’s 92 base hospital, Badamibagh, Srinagar for treatment.

Meanwhile, a large number of civilians rushed towards the encounter site at Kundullan and started pelting stones at security personnel. In the midst of the security forces attempting to chase away the protestors, three civilians were injured in the process.

Trump Picks Conservative Kavanaugh as US Supreme Court Nominee

US President Donald Trump has chosen conservative federal appeals court Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for US Supreme Court Justice, NBC News reported on Monday, just before the official White House announcement.

Kavanaugh would replaced retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy if confirmed by the US Senate.
