Brutal, Grotesque Violence Eclipses LGBT Equality Progress: UN
Violence against the LGBT community have been on a rise in several countries, according tot he UN.
The United Nations has said that “brutal” and “grotesque” homophobic and transphobic violence overshadows the equality of the LGBT people, thus posing hindrance to development work involving such communities.
Acts of violence include knife attacks, anal rape and genital mutilation, as well as stoning and dismemberment, an UN report said.
In six years spanning 2008 to 2014, instances of LGBT killings have been recorded in over 50 countries. The report says over 1600 people were brutally murdered, and there was a murder happening every two days. However due to fear of getting ostracised and extortion, these cases were hardly reported.
Even in case of those reported, the action taken by the police remained ineffective due to a prejudiced mentality.
In Uruguay, transsexual women are murdered almost regularly raising an alarm around the UN corners. Even in Chile assault cases take place, like a gay man who was beaten by neo-Nazis — he was burnt with cigarettes and swastikas were carved in his body.
