Fact-Check: Was TVK’s Office Demolished After Vijay Hosted Iftar Party? No!

The video of TVK's office being demolished predates Vijay's iftar party and happened before Ramzan began.

An old video is being shared to falsely claim that actor Vijay's party office was demolished after he hosted an iftar party during Ramzan.

A video showing a building with Indian actor Vijay's face on it being demolished is being shared on social media.

The claim: Those sharing the video have claimed that the building was demolished after his fans took offence to Vijay hosting an iftar party during the holy Islamic month of Ramzan.

Is it true?: No, the video is from February, whereas Ramzan began on 1 March.

• It shows the actor's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) office being demolished for encroaching on the highway.

How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search on the video using Google Lens, which led us to a YouTube video uploaded on the verified channel of 'NewsTamil 24X7' on 18 February.

• Its title and description mentioned that Vijay's political party, TVK's office was demolished and carried some visuals from the viral video.

Taking a cue from this, we ran a keyword search with the term 'TVK office demolished', for more context.

• Several Tamil language news organisations had published reports about this demolition.

• One such report by Maalai Malar mentioned that the TVK's Thiruvallur South District's Youth Wing office had been demolished by the Highways department, as it was enroaching on the highway near it in.

• News organisations DTNext and OneIndia Tamil too published reports, saying that the party's youth wing office had been demolished as it caused traffic disruption on the Chennai-Tirupathi National Highway.

Did it happen after the iftar party?: No. Actor Vijay hosted an iftar party on 7 March, a week after Ramzan began on 1 March.

The viral video of the building's demolition was shared nearly three weeks before Ramzan began.

Conclusion: A video of a TVK office being demolished has been falsely shared as people reacting to Vijay hosting an iftar party.
