Police Beat Citizenship Act Protesters in Assam? It’s a Mock Drill
The video actually dates back to 2017 and is from Jharkhand, showing a mock drill by Khunti police.
CLAIM
The passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (which became an Act after getting the President’s assent late on Thursday night) has led to widespread anger amongst several sections of the public, especially in the Northeast.
Amid the ongoing protests in parts of Assam, a video which shows police firing at civilians is doing the rounds on social media.
The claim shared alongside the video reads, “This is what is happening in Guwahati. Media has been stopped from reporting anything from there. Is this what you mean @narendramodi, when u asked for votes and you asked to have faith in you?”
The Quint also got multiple queries about this video on its WhatsApp helpline.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The video is not from Guwahati. It actually dates back to 2017 and is from Jharkhand. It shows a mock drill, organised by Khunti police.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
On breaking down the video into several key frames, using the Invid Google Chrome extension, we came across a video which was uploaded by a user on YouTube.
The video was first uploaded on 1 November 2017. The user had suggested that the video was part of a mock drill organised by the Khunti police in Jharkhand.
On watching the entire video, we confirmed the same as the police can be heard making announcements about a mock drill.
The same video was doing rounds on social media in August 2019 as well. Back then, the video was shared with the claim: “Straight bullets on unarmed civilians who are out on streets against violation of the human rights in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.”
