Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. The video is from 2021 and shows the deceased bodies in the Ganga River in Ghazipur during COVID-19.

What we found: We ran a keyword search using the words in the caption of the viral posts and found a post on X by user Brajbhushan Dubey from 7 February.

  • As per the user's X bio, it read, "Independent Journalist, 1.9 M Bubscriber On YouTube channel - Brajbhushan Markandey Social worker and Ex-member of Zila Panchayat Ghazipur."

  • The post included a link to a YouTube video, which matched the thumbnail of the viral posts.

  • The post's caption noted, "This video of ours during Covid was about dead bodies floating in the Ganga in Ghazipur; which was made viral by some mischievous elements by linking it to the stampede in Kumbh Mela. Take immediate cognisance." (sic.)

  • We checked the date of upload of YouTube video which was 17 May 2021.

  • It was uploaded with the title, "When CM Yogi was called; People with weak hearts should not watch! Dogs were tearing them apart! They were not worth counting!" (sic.) (translated from Hindi to English.)

  • The date and the clarification by the YouTuber made it clear that the video was not related to the recent Kumbh stampede.

  • Upon going through the YouTube page, we also found a video from 8 February in which the journalist remarks that his old video was being shared as recent and that he had lodged a complaint with the concerned authorities.

  • We did not find any credible information to prove that deceased bodies were found on the banks of Ganga in Ghazipur.

Conclusion: The viral video is old and unrelated and rather, it shows a report by journalist Brajbhushan Markandey from 2021 concerning bodies discarded along the banks of the Ganga in Ghazipur during COVID-19 pandemic.
