CLAIM

The video of a massive fire raging at a multi-storeyed building is viral on social media, with several people seen jumping out of the windows in a bid to save themselves from the blaze.

The video has been shared by several on Twitter as the fire that broke out on the top floor of a four-storey commercial building in south Kolkata on Friday, 26 April.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video is not of the Kolkata blaze, but is actually from another fire accident in Bangladesh’s Dhaka.

This video has earlier been debunked by The Quint, when it was viral as a fire at a Mumbai mall.

Meanwhile, here is a video of the fire that broke out in Kolkata’s Exide crossing area.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

Upon breaking the viral video into multiple key frames using the InVid software, and subsequently conducting a reverse image search, we realised that the incident is not from Mumbai, but from Dhaka.

A reverse image search of one of the key frames on Yandex led us to several Bangla news websites, which claimed that the fire was from the FT tower in Dhaka's Banani area.

A generic search on Google with the keyframe and the keywords ‘FT Tower in Banani’ led us to several news articles on the incident.

According to a PTI report, at least 19 persons were killed after the fire broke out in the 22-storey building in Dhaka on 28 March.

Of the 19 deceased, at least six died while jumping off from various floors in an attempt to escape the fire, local police told the news agency.
