2023 Clip of Floods in HP’s Sainj Valley Falsely Viral as Situation in Assam

A video showing several shops submerged in water is being shared as the present flood situation in Assam. Those sharing have claimed that the video is from Guwahati.

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

• This video is from Himachal Pradesh's Sainj Valley and dates back to July 2023.

What we found: At first, we divided the clip into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

• We found the viral video on an Instagram profile called the_phone_reviver. This video was posted on 8 September 2024.

• It was also mentioned that it shows Sainj Valley of Himachal Pradesh in July 2023.

The user mentioned 9/07/2023, as the date of the incident.

• We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found the viral video on a YouTube channel, along with details indicating that this video pertains to the floods that took place in the Sainj Valley of Himachal Pradesh in July 2023.

News reports: As per a report by the Indian Express from 14 July 2023, the local market with 200 shops was devastated, with 43 shops being flattened in Sainj.

• However, only 35 houses suffered damage, and there was no loss of life. The area remains cut off from the rest of the district. Relief had been provided in the affected area.

• Similarly, Amar Ujala also reported on the floods in Himachal Pradesh in 2023 and noted ₹1 crore as a relief measure was announced for the affected in Sainj.

Conclusion: A video from Sainj valley's floods in 2023 has gone viral to show the recent floods in Assam.
