A video of some people hitting two men inside what appears to be an office is going viral on social media platforms as a recent incident from Haryana.

What does the viral post say?: An X (formerly Twitter) premium user shared the clip with a caption in Hindi that loosely translated to, "Another trend of "Vote Theft". Vote thief BJP MLA's thrashing begins. Haryana's public has sprung into action."

An archive of the post can be found here.

The post had gained close to two lakh views on the platform. Archives of similar such claims could be viewed here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: Neither is this video recent nor is it related to the recent claims of vote theft in elections.

  • It dates back to July 2020, when two men were reportedly beaten by goons at the Sub-divisional Officer's (SDO) office in Haryana's Munak.

Hints in the viral video: We noticed that the video had a date stamp at the top-left side of the frame, where the year was shown as 2020. This indicated towards the possibility of the incident being an old one.

The date stamp showed the year as 2020.

News reports: Next, we conducted a Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral video and found the same visuals published on the official YouTube channel of India TV.

  • It was shared on 23 July 2020 and its title said, "2 men brutally beaten by goons at SDO office in Haryana's Munak."

  • A report published by ANI said that three people were arrested and a case was registered against five after a violent incident took place at the Electricity Department's office in Haryana's Munak.

  • The station-in-charge of Gharaunda police, Manoj Kumar, said, "It was a matter of conflict between two parties, we have registered a case against five people out of which we have arrested three..."

The report was last updated on 23 July 2020.

Conclusion: It is evident that the viral video is old and is being shared with a false claim.
