A cartoon showing US President Donald Trump urinating in front of a table fan is being widely shared on social media.

The claim: The cartoon is being shared to claim that it shows a real one being shared on Chinese social media, where people are "supporting India and shaming Donald Trump" for his administration hiking tariffs.

But...?: The image is altered and does not show commentary on the US' tariffs on India.

  • It dates back to November 2024 and shows a cartoon by a Canadian editorial cartoonist, who drew the Canadian flag on the fan.

How do we know?: We noticed that the cartoon carried the artist's signature and date stamp.

  • The stamp showed that the cartoon was dated 26 November 2024.

The cartoon shows the date 26 November 2024.

  • A reverse image search on the photo led us to an older Facebook post from 3 February 2025, which showed a slightly different version of the image with the Canadian flag instead of the Indian one.

  • The post noted that it was made by a Canadian cartoonist.

The post mentioned that a Canadian cartoonist made it.

  • Taking a cue from this, we added the keyword 'Canadian cartoon' to our reverse image search.

  • It led us to an X post by cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon, who had shared it in February 2025, saying that he drew it on 26 November 2024.

  • As per his bio on X, MacKinnon is an editorial cartoonist with Canadian news organisation Halifax Chronicle-Herald.

  • The cartoonist had shared the same artwork on his Facebook page back in February 2025.

For context, after Trump was declared president-elect in November 2024, he threatened tariffs on the US' largest trade partners, namely Canada, Mexico, and China, as per Reuters.

  • He said tariffs against Canada and Mexico would be imposed to restrict the flow of drugs, mainly fentanyl, and people across the border into the US.

  • For China, he added an additional 10 percent above and beyond other tariffs.

  • Until 26 November, when this cartoon was made, India was not on Trump's list of countries that he planned on hiking tariffs on, the Indian Express reported.
