Congress President Rahul Gandhi arrived in Bahrain – his first foreign trip after becoming the party chief – early on 8 January as part of his outreach to the Indian diaspora. He will also meet the Gulf country's Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamas Al-Khalifa.

Gandhi, who will be a state guest of Bahrain, is also expected to meet King Hamas bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Congress said Gandhi's visit is part of his interactions with Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). Gulf countries have the biggest Indian diaspora of more than 35 lakh.

  • Rahul Gandhi will conduct an interactive session with business leaders of Indian origin.
  • The Congress chief is accompanied by Shashi Tharoor, Sam Pitroda, Milind Deora and other senior leaders.
  • Before reaching Bahrain, Gandhi tweeted “NRIs are the brand ambassadors of our nation across the globe.”

NRIs Are the True Representatives of Our Soft Power: Rahul

Gandhi will be chief guest at the three-day valedictory function organised by 'Global Organisation of People of India Origin' (GOPIO) on Monday. Delegates from 50 countries are participating in the event, which is scheduled to start at 8:45 PM, Indian time.

Before commencing on his foreign trip, Rahul tweeted saying, “NRIs are the true representatives of our soft power and the brand ambassadors of our nation across the globe.”

The Gandhi scion was welcomed by many supporters when he landed at the Bahrain Airport. Other senior Congress leaders accompanying Gandhi include Shashi Tharoor, Milind Deora, Madhu Goud Yaskhi, Divya Spandana.

An Outreach to Popularise Congress Among NRIs

Sources said the Crown Prince and First Deputy Premier Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa will host the lunch for Gandhi. He will also have an interactive session with business leaders of Indian Origin.

It will be Gandhi's first foreign visit since his elevation as party chief in December. Gandhi had visited the US in September and addressed students.

Gandhi's outreach is being seen as a move to popularise Congress among the large Indian diaspora. Prime Minister Narendra Modi engages frequently with the diaspora during his visits abroad.

The Congress President is expected to return to India on 9 January.
