The district president of Congress’ student body in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor was arrested on Sunday, 24 February, for allegedly trying to misbehave and tear BJP flags.

Speaking to The Quint, Bijnor SP Sanjeev Tyagi confirmed that NSUI district president Udit Tyagi has been arrested based on an FIR lodged “3-4 days ago”.

A video circulating on Twitter purportedly shows a man, who claimed to be Udit Tyagi, preventing BJP workers from putting up party flags in Bijnor. The man can be heard criticising BJP workers for putting up flags at a time when jawans were being martyred.

A report by The Times of India quoted local BJP leader Neeraj Sharma as saying, “We were putting up flags on houses in Chandpur on Saturday (23 February) when a man started opposing our campaign. He misbehaved with us and even tried to tear our party flags, following which we filed a complaint with police.”

The report also quoted Congress leader Dungar Singh as saying that the party workers will meet the police over the issue on Monday, 25 February.
