A 35-year-old man was shot dead outside his house in Vikaspuri last night. His two friends were present in the house at that time while his wife was in her office.

Mobile Phone Found from Om Prakash Chautala's Prison Cell in Tihar

A mobile phone was found from the prison cell of former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala during a surprise inspection by Tihar jail authorities, officials said on Friday, 14 June.

According to Additional Inspector General, Tihar, Rajkumar, a surprise inspection was conducted on Thursday and a mobile phone, a charger, tobacco pouch, and a wire were recovered from the prison cell.

Chautala's co-inmate Ramesh claimed that the items belonged to him, the officials said.

The mobile phone was handed over to the Delhi Police's Special Cell and it will find out about the calls that were made from the phone, they said.

Chautala is serving a 10-year sentence in Delhi's Tihar jail. He was convicted in a teachers' recruitment scam case.

Regime and Russia Bombardment Kills 28 in Northwest Syria: Monitor

Regime and Russian air strikes and shelling killed at least 28 people including seven civilians in embattled northwest Syria, a war monitor said on Friday, despite a ceasefire announced by Moscow.

The civilians were killed in regime air strikes and shelling on the south of Idlib province and the north of Hama province on Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Russian and regime air strikes also killed 21 jihadist and Islamist fighters in the same region the same day, the Britain-based monitor added.

India to Impose Retaliatory Tariff on 29 US Items from 16 June

After extending the deadline for several times, India has decided to impose additional customs duties on 29 US products, including almond, walnut and pulses, with effect from 16 June, sources told PTI.

A notification with this regard will be issued by the finance ministry soon, they added.

The move will hurt American exporters of these 29 items as they have to pay duties on these products. India would get about USD 217 million additional revenue from such imports.

2 Shot Dead in Northeast Delhi

Two men were shot dead allegedly by unidentified persons on Friday, 14 June, in northeast Delhi, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Khurvesh (40) and Kanchi (28), both residents of Nand Nagari, they said.

Khurvesh was named in 41 cases in the national capital and marked as a "bad character" in police records, police said, adding that they are checking whether cases are registered against Kanchi.

"Police received information at 12:12 pm on Friday regarding the incident near a signal at Nand Nagri," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

2 Dead, 26 Injured in Accidents in J&K's Doda District

Two persons were killed and 26 others injured in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Friday, 14 June, officials said.

A woman was among the two persons who died and a teenage girl was seriously injured after their car plunged into the Kalnai river on the Thathri-Kilhotran road in the afternoon, the officials said.

The three persons were rescued and taken to a hospital, where the doctor declared Dooni Chand and Neevi Manhas dead. The injured girl is still unconscious and undergoing treatment, said Mohd Anwar Banday, the sub-divisional magistrate of Thathri area, adding that an investigation was on.

In another incident, a bus carrying 35 passengers overturned at Gatsu area of the district in the morning, Superintendent of Police Shabir Ahmed Malik told PTI.

Twenty-five passengers were injured and five of them are critical. They are undergoing treatment at the district hospital, while those who are critical might be shifted to the GMC in Jammu, the officer said.

Maruti Launches BS-VI Version of WagonR, Priced up to Rs 5.96 Lakh

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Friday, 14 June, said it has launched hatchback WagonR with BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Depending on the features introduced across variants, the ex-showroom price of the model in Delhi-NCR shall vary from Rs 5.10 lakh to Rs 5.91 lakh and in rest of the country from Rs 5.15 lakh to Rs 5.96 lakh, MSI said in a regulatory filing.

The increase in prices of the model has been in the range of Rs 16,000 as compared with the earlier version.

In a bid to promote Indian languages, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has asked all satellite TV channels to display the casting, credits and titles of Hindi and regional language serials in the respective languages also.

It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that several Hindi and regional language TV channels display the casting, credits, titles of Hindi and regional language TV serials only in English, an official statement said.

This practise tends to deprive people versed with Hindi and regional languages of the valuable information about casting of TV serials or programmes, it said.

Monsoon Session of Goa Assembly from 15 July to 9 August

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha on Friday, 14 June, called monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly from 15 July. The session will end on 9 August.

It would be the first full-length session of the government since Pramod Sawant became chief minister.

Sawant, who was Speaker of the Assembly, took reins of the government after the death of then chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

The session will have discussion on the state Budget 2019-20, though a full-fledged Budget was not tabled in the House in February owing to Parrikar's health.

Uddhav Thackeray, 18 Sena MPs to Visit Ayodhya on 16 June

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will visit Ayodhya with 18 newly elected party MPs on Sunday, making a fresh pitch for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site there.

Thackeray will offer prayers at the makeshift Ram Lalla temple at the site.

This will be Thackeray's first visit to Ayodhya after the Lok Sabha results last month. He had visited Ayodhya in November last year.

The Shiv Sena had earlier announced that Thackeray and the newly elected MPs would visit Ayodhya before the beginning of the Parliament session on Monday.

However, the party's state unit chief Anil Singh said the visit should not been seen from the electoral lens and it was "a matter of devotion and faith".

Some Commonality in Dabholkar, Pansare Killings: CBI, Maharashtra CID to HC

The CBI and Maharashtra CID told the Bombay High Court on Friday, 14 June, that it had, to some extent, established commonality between the killings of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar and activist Govind Pansare.

A division bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Gautam Patel was told that in the Dabholkar case all the accused have been arrested but the weapon used in the crime is yet to be recovered.

The CBI informed the court that an operation will be carried out within a month to search and retrieve four country-made pistols, which were allegedly dismantled and thrown by the accused into a creek in adjoining Thane district.

"We are awaiting necessary permissions from government agencies to undertake the operation," CBI counsel Anil Singh told the court.

The bench then noted that the operation should not be delayed and should be carried out before onset of monsoon.

13 Killed in Dust Storm, Hailstorm-Related Incidents in UP

At least 13 people were killed in dust storm and hailstorm-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, the office of the state relief commissioner said on Friday, 14 June.

Siddhartha Nagar bore the maximum onslaught with four deaths reported from the district, followed by Deoria where three people died and Ballia where two died, state Relief Commissioner G S Priyadarshi told PTI.

One person was injured, while 22 animals have also died. As many as 93 houses were damaged across the state, the official said.

SC Refuses to Interfere With NEET Exam

The Supreme Court on Friday, 14 June, refused to entertain a plea which sought quashing of the answer keys of some questions in the NEET(UG)-2019 examination saying that an expert body has duly applied its mind and revised answers were issued.

The top court, however, allowed the four Hyderabad based students who have challenged the answer keys, to approach the high court for the relief.

It said that courts are not experts in each and every subject and time has come when the interference in this arena should be stopped.

A vacation bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Surya Kant allowed the four medical aspirants to withdraw their plea and granted them liberty to approach the high court with their grievances.

Delhi Govt Forms Task Force to Ensure Women's Safety in Public Transport

The Delhi government, which has proposed to make travel free for women in buses and Metro trains, on Friday, 14 June, announced formation of a task force to ensure the safety of female commuters in public transport.

"The task force will conduct both off and on ground review and monitoring of all existing schemes and propose new plans for women safety in Delhi” vice chairperson of the Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) Jasmine Shah said.

The task force approved by Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot will evaluate and monitor women safety related initiatives of the government, including the proposed installation of CCTV cameras and panic buttons, and deployment of marshals in public buses.

Man Kills 3 Minor Daughters, Self After Wife's Death

Three months after the death of his wife, a 35-year-old man allegedly lynched his three minor daughters and then committed suicide at a village in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Friday, police said.

Bodies of the girls - aged around 9 years, 7 years and 5 years - were found lying in a pool of blood at the house of Durga Sidhu in Ulibasa village.

Sidhu, a tribal man, committed suicide by hanging himself from a wooden beam in the house, Inspector In-Charge of Anandpur police station, Gagan Bihari Biswal said.

His mother, who found the bodies, told the police that Sidhu's wife had died around three months ago and he was under stress since then.

Andhra, Telangana CMs to Meet in Amaravati on 17 June

UAE Loses Claim Against Rival Qatar in World Court

The UN's top court on Friday rejected a request by the United Arab Emirates to take special measures against Qatar in a two-year crisis that has added to growing tensions in the Gulf.

Oil and gas-rich Qatar has faced an economic and diplomatic boycott since June 2017 by Gulf rivals who accused Doha of backing terrorism and being too close to regional rival Iran.

Abu Dhabi had asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Doha "aggravating" the dispute, after Qatar won a case last year over alleged discrimination against its citizens.

ICJ Chief judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf said the court "rejects the request for provisional measures submitted by the United Arab Emirates" by a margin of 15 to one.
