Haryana Municipal Election Results: BJP Wins All 5 Mayoral Posts

Out of the 110 wards of the five municipal corporations, the BJP secured a victories in 62.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won the mayoral polls of five municipal corporations in Haryana on Wednesday, 19 December.

The counting of votes for five municipal corporations (110 wards) and two municipal committees (26 wards), began at 8 am on Wednesday. Polling in these corporations took place on 16 December.

The BJP candidates secured victories for the mayor’s post in Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Yamunanagar. Out of the 110 wards of the five municipal corporations, the BJP secured a victories in 62.

Haryana Chief Minister and BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar said the party’s win in mayoral elections was a “win of the government’s policies and the party’s hard work, especially in Panipat where our candidate won by a massive margin.”

Results/Trends So Far:

  • BJP candidates won the mayoral polls in all five cities – Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak and Yamunanagar.
  • The BJP secured the largest victory in Panipat, securing 22 out of 26 wards.
  • In Panipat, BJP mayoral candidate Avneet won by a margin of 74,940 votes over Anshu Pahwa.

Hisar Results:

  • BJP candidate Gautam Sardana won the mayoral polls in Hisar by a margin of 28,091 votes over Rekha Eran, a Congress-backed candidate.
  • The BJP won seven out of 20 wards in Hisar.

Rohtak Results:

  • BJP candidate Man Mohan Goyal secured the Rohtak mayoral post, winning over Sita Ram by a margin of 14,776 votes.
  • The BJP won eight out of 22 wards in Rohtak.
  • Notably, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda, who is the son of former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, is an MP from Rohtak constituency.

Yamunanagar Results:

  • BJP’s Madan Singh trumped Rakesh Kumar for the Yamunanagar mayoral seat, winning by a margin of 40,678 votes.
  • The BJP won 13 out of 22 wards from Yamunanagar.

Panipat Results:

  • Avneet Kaur won the Panipat mayoral seat over Anshu Pahwa by a huge margin of 74,940 votes.
  • The BJP won 22 out of 26 wards from Panipat.

Karnal Results:

  • BJP’s Renu Bala won the Karnal mayoral seat over Asha Wadhwa by a margin of 9,348 votes.
  • The BJP won 12 out of 20 wards from Karnal.

Municipal Polls Create Electoral History

  • A total of 14,01,454 voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in 136 wards of the municipal corporations and committees.
  • The State Election Commission (SEC) said that there were 744,468 male voters and 656,986 female voters.
  • Officials said that for the first time in the electoral history of municipal elections in the country, ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) had been introduced as an option in the electronic voting machines (EVMs).
  • While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) contested the elections on their respective party symbols, the Congress had chosen not to use the party symbol for candidates backed by the party.
  • The elections are being considered important before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and Assembly polls likely to be held in October 2019.
  • The BJP has been in power in Haryana since October 2014.
