The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgham (DMDK) party led by actor-turned-politician A Vijaykanth lost recognition as a ‘state party’ as it got less than six percent votes in the Tamil Nadu assembly election.

The DMDK was the principal opposition party in the outgoing assembly and Vijaykanth was the leader of the opposition.

All DMDK candidates were defeated in the 16 May polls. Vijaykanth himself finished third in Ulundurpettai after the AIADMK and DMK candidates. The DMDK secured just 2.4 percent of votes across the state and did not win even one seat.

In order to get the Election Commission’s recognition as a state party, a party must secure a minimum of six percent of all votes polled.
