The Congress party's Central Election Committee (CEC) may finalise the first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls on Wednesday, 27 February, Hindustan Times reported on Tuesday, citing a party functionary.

The CEC meeting is expected to discuss the names of probable candidates for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh. While Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Lok Sabha seats at 80, Maharashtra comes second with 48 seats.

The expected finalisation of candidates will come just a day before the crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet on Thursday in PM Modi's bastion, Gujarat.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has been left out of the mahagathbandhan of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The seats coming under eastern UP, where Priyanka Gandhi is in-charge, will especially be in focus at the CEC meet on Wednesday, the HT report said.

Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the grand old party is fighting in alliance with Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
