Congress MLA Tarlochan Singh hurled a shoe at Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia while protesting Congress MLAs, who wanted a no-confidence motion to be taken up, threw papers at the Assembly Speaker as the Punjab Vidhan Sabha saw uproarious scenes on the concluding day of Monsoon Session.
Singh later claimed that he had actually intended to throw the shoe at Akali MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha because he had abused him and his caste.
As “pandemonium” prevailed, Indian Express reporter Man Aman Chhina tweeted out updates of the happenings in the Punjab Assembly.
Bringing the Speaker’s attention to the show-hurling incident, BJP Minister Anil Joshi allegedly named Congress MLA Tarlochan Singh as the person who had thrown the shoe at Majithia.
Reacting to the shoe-throwing incident, Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia said that it clearly depicted Congress party’s “desperation”.
Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal said that the incident on Wednesday was just an attempt by the Congress to keep their name in the headlines.
The Punjab Assembly seemed to be in complete turmoil on Wednesday morning as instances of a shoe being thrown at the treasury bench, stationary being hurled at the Speaker and MLAs shouting anti-Badal slogans, were reported.
The Watch and Ward staff covered the Speaker, but MLAs kept throwing papers and other documents even as bills continued to be passed in the House.
