Captain Amarinder Singh will contest from Lambi, hockey legend Pargat Singh from Jalandhar Cantonment and cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar East for the Congress in the upcoming Punjab elections.
Amarinder termed Lambi, which is also Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s constituency, as his karambhoomi though Patiala is his ‘janambhoomi’. Explaining his move, he said:
Lashing out at the Badal-led SAD-BJP government for allegedly failing to protect the religious fabric of Punjab, Amarinder said they had even failed to complete memorials started by the Congress in "this historic land".
In an apparent reference to Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's 'Sukhvilas' hotel, he alleged that the Badals have only been interested in building hotels to further their personal interests.
Meanwhile, AAP slammed Sidhu, who was recently inducted into the Congress, for joining a party "he once attacked". AAP said that Congress had "imposed" the former cricketer on its Punjab leadership and "accepted defeat as it does not have a face".
