The BJP on Monday played on the words "Pidi" and "peedi" while dismissing the process for generational change in the Congress leadership as "Pidikaran", a reference to Rahul Gandhi's dog.

Neither the old "peedi" nor the new "peedi" matter in the opposition party, BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said, using the Hindi word for ‘generation’ to take a swipe at the process to elevate Rahul Gandhi from vice president to president of the Congress.

In no organisation is a member promoted for repeatedly failing to perform, he said after the Gandhi scion filed his nomination papers to succeed his mother Sonia Gandhi as Congress president.

"Pidikaran of the Congress is now complete. Neither the old ‘peedi’ (generation), nor the new generation matters. Only Pidi matters," Rao said in a statement.

He termed the entire election process a "mockery of democratic traditions".

Several leaders from the BJP have come out voicing their criticisms of Rahul Gandhi’s nomination and probable elevation as party president. PM Modi , while addressing a rally earlier in the day at Gujarat dubbed the act ‘Aurangzeb Raj’.

Taking potshots at the opposition party, the prime minister said, "Mani Shanker Aiyar who was a minister in Congress government said 'did elections happen during Mughal rule? After Jahangir, Shahjahan came, was any election held? After Shahjahan it was understood that Aurangzeb would be the leader.'

"Does the Congress accept that it is a family party? We don't want this Aurangzeb rule," Modi said.

Similarly, UP CM Yogi Adityanath called the opposition a burden on the nation.

Congress has become a burden on this nation, now would be good if after Rahul ji’s elevation once and for all this burden is removed.

Calling Rahul Gandhi the ‘owner’ of the Congress Party, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that that the party lacked democracy, and they were being forced to make an arrangement due to the EC regulations.

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi too took a dig at said that such an election was only possible in a feudal setup. “I congratulate Rahul Gandhi for his promotion without performance, can only be possible in a feudal setup”, he said.
