NASA Report: Glaciers Previously Considered Stable Discovered to be Melting

A NASA report on the melting of glaciers has been making news today. The report, published by NASA yesterday, notes that a group of glaciers — spanning one-eighth of East Antartica’s coast — has been losing ice.

“East Antarctica has the potential to reshape coastlines around the world through sea level rise, but scientists have long considered it more stable than its neighbor, West Antarctica. Now, new detailed NASA maps of ice velocity and elevation show that a group of glaciers spanning one-eighth of East Antarctica’s coast have begun to lose ice over the past decade, hinting at widespread changes in the ocean.”

The study states that scientists used to believe that East Antartica was more stable than West Antartica, but new evidence shows that “East Antarctica has the potential to reshape coastlines around the world through sea level rise.”

Shaktikanta Das Appointed as Urjit Patel’s Replacement at RBI

One day after Urjit Patel announced his resignation as the Governor of the RBI, former Finance Secretary Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the new RBI Governor.

Patel’s sudden resignation, which his predecessor Raghuram Rajan has warned is a cause of great alarm, came in the wake of attacks on the autonomy of the RBI.

Shaktikanta Das was the economic affairs secretary from 2015 to 2017. PM Modi initially brought Das into the Finance Ministry to head up the revenue department, later moving him to economic affairs, where he helped to spearhead the prime minister’s controversial demonetisation drive in 2016.

SC: Murders of Kalburgi, Dabholkar, Lankesh, Pansare Should Be Investigated Together if Links Found

The Supreme Court has asked the CBI to investigate whether there is a ‘common thread’ in the murders of MM Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar, Gauri Lankesh and Govind Pansare.

“If there’s a common thread that runs through them, if according to investigators there’s a common thread, then it should be by same agency to investigate the deaths.”

Three Policemen Killed in Shopian District

Three policemen — Abdul Majid, Manzoor Ahmed and Mohammed Amin — have been killed in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The attack on these policemen took place as they were in a pre-fabricated room near the pocket housing six Kashmiri pandit families. A fourth policemen is critically injured. Officials have stated that they received an intercept indicating that Jaish-e-Mohammed, a banned terrorist organisation, is behind the killing of Abdul Majid, Manzoor Ahmed and Mohammed Amin.

SC: Media, Police Should Not Disclose Names of Sexual Assault Victims

SC rules to protect identities of sexual assault and rape victims.

Noting that it is “unfortunate” that Indian society practices “untouchability” against victims of rape, the Supreme Court directed the police not to put FIRs in sexual assault cases in the public domain. Such cases against minors too must not be made public. The bench led by Justice Madan B Lokur added that media organisations, too, must not reveal the identities of victims of sexual crimes “even in a remote manner”.
