Collegium Rejects Govt’s Objections, Reiterates Names of 2 Judges

The Collegium has also recommended the names of Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant for elevation as apex court judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday, 9 May, reiterated its recommendation for elevation of Justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna to the top court, thereby rejecting the government's objections.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure, the Centre will now have to appoint the two judges.

Sources cited by PTI said on Tuesday that the government was learnt to have returned to the Collegium the names of two high court chief justices recommended for elevation as judges of the SC.

On 12 April, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended the names of Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Aniruddha Bose, and Gauhati HC Chief Justice AS Bopanna for elevation to the top court.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the SC Collegium also recommended the names of Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant for elevation as apex court judges.

While Justice Gavai is currently serves in the Bombay High Court, Justice Suryakant is Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. Referring to Justice Gavai, the collegium resolution was quoted as saying, "On his appointment, the SC Bench will have a judge belonging to Scheduled Caste category after about a decade."
