100 Kg Gold Seized in Raids on Tamil Nadu Contractor

The Income Tax Department, on Monday, 16 July, found Rs. 160-crore cash and about 100-kg bullion during raids at several premises of a road construction firm in Tamil Nadu, officials said.

The searches were launched on the premises of Ms SPK and Company, a partnership firm engaged in road and highway construction, on contract from the government.

Nearly 30,000 Pakistani Hindus Eligible for PAN & Aadhar Cards

Nearly 30,000 Pakistani nationals, mostly Hindus, have been granted Long Time Visas (LTVs) since 2011, making them eligible to obtain PAN and Aadhaar cards as well as buy property.

In 2018 alone, till 17 July, 6,092 Pakistani nationals have been given LTVs in line with the Modi government's policy to help minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who come to India after facing alleged persecution in their home country.

SC Urges Centre to Expedite the Process of Appointment of Lokpal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, 17 July urged the central government to expedite the process of appointment of Lokpal and set up a search committee at once.

The Supreme Court fixed the matter for further hearing on 24 July. The court was hearing a contempt petition, filed by senior advocate Shanti Bhushan on behalf of NGO Common Cause, raising the issue of non-appointment of Lokpal despite the apex court's judgement of 27 April 2017.

Mentally Deranged Woman Beaten up on "Child-Lifter" Charges in West Bengal

A mentally deranged woman was beaten up in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal on suspicion of being child-lifter, police said on 17 July.

The incident occurred on Monday evening, 16 July at around 8 pm at Barogharia Gram Panchayat area in Dhupguri Block.

The bruised woman was taken to a hospital and was released after initial treatment.

200 Dead, 25,000 Imprisoned in Bangladesh's War on Drugs

The death toll from Bangladesh's contentious Philippines-style war on drugs since May 2018 has hit 200, a local rights group said on Tuesday, 17 July, with some 25,000 others imprisoned.

Bangladesh launched the crackdown to smash the surging trade in "yaba", a cheap methamphetamine and caffeine pill, which authorities say has spread to almost every village and town.

But rights groups say that many of the victims are shot by police in cold blood and that the onslaught was in part being used as a cover to settle scores.

Four priests attached to the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church are accused of sexually abusing a 34-year-old married women by using her confessional statement. Two priests are seeking anticipatory bail.

Trump Says He Has Confidence on US Agencies on Russia

US President Donald Trump, grappling with a torrent of criticism over his performance at a Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Tuesday, 17 July that he misspoke at their joint news conference and meant to say he saw no reason why it was not Russia that interfered in the 2016 US election.

Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, said he had full faith and support for US intelligence agencies and accepted their conclusion that Russia meddled in the election.

But he said Russian actions had no impact on the outcome of the vote and the administration would work aggressively to protect the November 2018 congressional elections.
