Vajpayee's Ashes to Be Immersed in Haridwar on Sunday: Bjp

Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's ashes will be immersed in various rivers across the country, starting with the Ganga at Haridwar on Sunday, 19 August, the BJP said.

The immersion ceremony at the holy city will be attended by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, his Uttarakhand counterpart Trivendra Singh Rawat among others, BJP leader Bhupender Yadav told reporters.

UP Govt to Set up 'Tent City' for Kumbh Mela in Allahabad

The Uttar Pradesh government will set up a tent city to host the foreign guests who are expected to attend the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in 2019.

“The Yogi Adityanath government is setting up a tent city with well-equipped cottages, restaurants, yoga centers & connecting roads as well, for the 6000 foreign guests expected to attend Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in 2019”, said Uttar Pradesh’s Women and Child Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi told ANI.

School Principal Arrested for Dishonouring National Flag in Assam

The principal of a missionary school in Assam's Morigoan district was arrested on charges of dishonouring the national flag, police said.

According to district's Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrinmoy Goswami, Father James Xavier was arrested after locals complained that he did not hoist the national flag in his school on Independence Day and also defied a government order to fly it half mast from August 16 for seven days as a mark of respect to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Father Xavier was released on bail by a local court on Saturday, 18 August, the DSP added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condoled the death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Saturday, 18 August, terming it as a "great loss" to humanity.

"Heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. A great loss to humanity," Kejriwal tweeted on the news about Annan's death.

Rahul Gandhi Forms Team to Hold Conferences over Rafale Deal

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has constituted a six-member team to hold conferences nationwide over the Rafale deal, reported ANI. Senior Congress leader Jaipal Reddy will head the six-member team.

According to sources, about 50 Congress leaders will hold press conferences in 100 cities across India in the upcoming days on the deal.

Three Dead, 18 Wounded in Poland Bus Crash

Three people were killed and 18 wounded in southeastern Poland when a bus with Ukrainian tourists headed for Austria plunged off the road, emergency services said on Saturday, 18 August.

The bus had been travelling from the Ukrainian city of Lviv to Vienna late yesterday when it missed a turn on the National 28 near the village of Leszczawa Dolna and crashed through the guard rail.

Snowden Demands Penalty for Misuse of Aadhaar Data

The government must slap penalty on anyone using Aadhaar data for purposes other than public services, whistle-blower Edward Snowden has said.

Addressing an event via video-conference, he said that if Indian government was serious about implementing Aadhaar for public good, it must ensure "criminal penalty" against anyone misusing the data.

Mass surveillance system would look like Aadhaar as it creates systemisation of society, he told the fifth edition of 'Talk Journalism' event organised in Jaipur last weekend.

UAE Extends Helping Hand to Kerala Flood Victims

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) prime minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has come out in support for deluge-hit Kerala and ordered the formation of an emergency committee to provide relief to the victims hit by devastating rains and floods in the state.

Maktoum, who is also the vice president of UAE, said that the UAE and the Indian community will unite to offer relief to those affected.

Death Toll Rises to 41 in Italy Bridge Collapse

Italian media say three more bodies have been found in rubble of the Genoa bridge collapse, raising the death toll to 41.

Genoa's prefect's office said it didn't immediately have official confirmation of the reports by ANSA news agency and other Italian news media Saturday that the bodies were found by rescuers overnight.

Infosys CFO MD Ranganath Resigns

Mavinakere Dwarakanath Ranganath, the chief financial officer at Infosys, resigned from his post at India’s second-largest software service provider to “pursue professional opportunities in new areas”, BloombergQuint reported.

The board of directors in a meeting today accepted Ranganath’s resignation and said the search for the next CFO will start immediately. Ranganath will continue in his current position as the CFO till Nov. 16, the company said in an exchange filing.

'Singapore Will Remember Vajpayee as a Good Friend': Foreign Minister

Singapore's foreign minister has condoled the death of Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 16 August, saying that the former Indian prime minister will always be remembered as a good friend of the country.

Vajpayee was a selfless and visionary leader who made great contribution India, transforming the economy and elevating the standing in the region and the world.
Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan wrote in the condolence book at the Indian High Commission.

"He oversaw strong growth in the relation between our two countries (Singapore and India) and will always be remembered as a good friend of Singapore," Balakrishnan wrote.

WCD Ministry Summons Air India Chief Over Delay in Sexual Harassment Probe

The Women and Child Development Ministry has summoned Air India chief Pradeep Singh Kharola next week seeking explanation behind the delay in completing probe in a sexual harassment case, a senior official said.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi had directed the head of the Internal Complaints Committee of Air India to complete the inquiry in June.

Panel Probing Jayalalithaa's Death Summons AIIMS Doctors

The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry, probing the circumstances leading to former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's death, has summoned three doctors of AIIMS, who examined her at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital, to appear before it on 23 August and 24 August.

The commissioned has summoned G C Khilnani of the Department of Pulmonology, Anjan Trikha, Professor of Anaesthesiology, and Nitish Nayak, professor at the Department of Cardiology.

The expert doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be examined as the commission's witness on both the days, panel sources told PTI.

US Sanctions Myanmar Military Commanders Over Rohingya Abuses

The US government today hit four Myanmar military commanders and two military units with punitive sanctions, accusing them of "serious human rights abuses" and "ethnic cleansing" in violently expelling minority Rohingya from their homes.

Military and border guard commanders Aung Kyaw Zaw, Khin Maung Soe, Khin Hlaing, and Thura San Lwin were accused of leading violent campaigns against the Muslim Rohingya in Rakhine state as well as minorities in Kachin and Shan states.

Demonetisation, GST Led to Decline in MSME Credit: RBI Study

An RBI study has found that the controversial note ban imposed in November 2016 has led to further decline in the already falling credit to the MSME sector, while GST rollout has not made any significant positive impact on overall credit to the sector but has deeply dented their exports.

The credit disbursal to the MSME sector has, however recovered a tad since the lows of 2017 to reach the mid-2015 level, notes an RBI report called the Mint Street Memo.

Will Extend Fresh Invitation to Mamata Banerjee: Chinese Official

A senior Chinese official in Kolkata said on Friday, 17 August, that his country will again extend invitation to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to visit China and the dates for the proposed visit were being worked out.

Banerjee was scheduled to visit China in June but she cancelled the trip abruptly hours before starting her trip on 22 June.

She attributed the cancellation of the visit to “non-confirmation of political meetings at the appropriate level.”

'World Hindi Conference' to Begin in Mauritius Today

The World Hindi Conference, aimed at popularising and expanding the reach of the Hindi language, is set to commence in Mauritius from Saturday, 18 August, ANI reported.

Held under the aegis of the External Affairs Ministry, Minister Sushma Swaraj and other ministers will be attending the event from 18-20 August. The 11th edition will see representation from 28 states and three Union Territories with a large government delegation of 377 people, reported ANI.
