Kejriwal Questions Delhi’s Situation After AAP Councillor Attacked

Jitendra Kumar, Aam Aadmi Party Councillor sees it as a politically motivated attack

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday, 16 November, reacted to the attack on Jitendra Kumar, Aam Aadmi Party Councillor from south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Thursday, 15 November.

The AAP leader questioned what is going on in the capital after Kumar claimed that around two dozen men opened fired on his home, Hindustan Times reported.

Kejriwal in a tweet asked, “What is going on in Delhi?”

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Kumar said that at the time of incident he was home with relatives who had come to attend his wedding scheduled on Monday, 19 November. The firing started at around 6:30 pm, and a car and three bikes were also damaged.

“After hearing the gunshots, we immediately locked ourselves in rooms and called the police. Police reached half an hour later and by the time they reached the attackers had fled. There were 20 to 25 people who fired around 10 rounds. We luckily survived.”

According to Kumar, the attack was politically motivated. He added that he could identify three to four of the attackers.

Raghav Chadha, national spokesperson, AAP tweeted that the attack on the councillor was politically motivated.

Devesh Chandra Srivastava, Joint Commissioner of Police (southeastern range), confirmed that five to six empty bullet shells were found around Kumar’s house, Hindustan Times reported.

Earlier, Kumar’s neighbour had an argument with a man over the issue of public urination, and the police thinks the attack could be related to the same.

“Initial enquiry revealed that the councillor had an altercation with some locals over an issue two days ago. We are looking into this matter. The suspects are being identified. An appropriate legal action would be taken as per law.”

However, Kumar dismissed the theory and refused to link the attack and the earlier incident, Hindustan Times reported.
