“Happy birthday to you,” sing those assembled at the Dalit Prernasthal in Noida, as they celebrate Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s 126th birth anniversary.

The air rings with cries of ‘Jai Bhim.’ At the foot of a statue of Babasaheb, garlands adorn a framed photograph of the icon. On the stage nearby, a troupe of musicians sing in praise of Ambedkar. Some in the crowd break into a celebratory dance.

But those in the gathering admit that there is a long way to go in the struggle to achieve Ambedkar’s vision for a society free of caste discrimination.

Dalits are still treated like slaves. Our fight is not over till that ends and we achieve the equality that Babasaheb promised, that our Constitution guarantees.
