Two Indian soldiers who fought alongside the British in the World War I were ceremoniously laid to rest at the military cemetary in Laventie, France on Monday.

During an excavation on the southern side of Richebourg, France two human remains were discovered on 20 September 2016. They were subsequently identified as casualties of the Royal Garhwal Rifles, according to an Indiatimes report.

Media reports say that the office of Commonwealth War Graves Commission along with the French Government and the Indian Embassy in France decided to hold the ceromony to honour the veterans and lay them beside their comrades at Lavantie Military Cemetery. This happened alongside the Annual Memorial Service to commemorate the Indian Army soldiers who sacrificed their lives in France and Belgium.

The soil from the graves of these soldiers will be brought back to their homeland.

A delegation comprising a Commandant and a Subedar Major of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, two bagpipers from the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Pipe Band and Colonel Nitin Negi, grandson of late Naik Darwan Singh Negi, Victoria Cross, attended the ceremony, reported Times Now.

Homage was also paid on this occasion to the soldiers of the Indian Meerut Division.
