At least 14 people were killed when a truck carrying over 50 wedding guests drove into a roadside canal on Friday morning in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district.

The driver, who was allegedly in a drowsy state, lost control of the vehicle, which broke through a railing and plunged into the canal. More than 24 people were injured in the accident, which took place near Sarai Neem.

A major rescue operation was launched to rescue the injured from the canal. They were later admitted to the primary healthcare centre at Jalesar.

Condoling the loss of lives in the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each for those seriously injured.

My thoughts are with all those who lost their loved ones in the accident in Etah, UP. May those injured in the accident recover quickly.
Prime Minister Modi

The incident comes a few months after 15 children were killed and over 20 others injured when their school bus collided with a lorry amid dense fog on Aliganj-Patiyali road in Etah in January.
