The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that it had appointed an interlocutor for holding talks with various stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir and requested it to adjourn the hearing over the politically contentious Article 35A of the Constitution, which gives special rights to permanent residents of the state, saying the court hearing may affect the dialogue process.
Appearing for the Centre, Attorney General KK Venugopal conveyed this to a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud following which the court deferred the hearing by three months. The AG had sought six months time.
A total of four petitions demanding scrapping of the provision have been filed in the SC and were listed for hearing on Monday before the bench.

Tankha said the linkage was “orchestrated by the Union of India in tandem with private telecom service providers” in violation of the fundamental right to privacy.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of tanking the country’s economy by deploying two torpedoes — GST and demonetisation.
Speaking to reporters outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said while the economy was able to withstand the “torpedo” of note ban, it could not withstand the one of GST. The economy, he said, “was in tatters now”.
“The prime minister is not able to understand the feeling of the people and the hurt and sadness these two decisions have caused,” he said.

Hardik Patel-led Patidars are willing to consider the Congress proposal of providing 20 percent reservation to economically weaker classes (EBCs) through a Constitutional amendment, a group’s spokesperson said on Friday, even as their meeting with the main opposition party seeking their support for forthcoming polls remained inconclusive.
The Patidar leaders, however, decided to withdraw their threat to disrupt Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Surat on 3 November, an indication of forward movement in the first round of talks.
Patel, who did not participate in the meeting but has been seeking other backward classes (OBCs) reservation for his community, said he was ready for a “compromise”.

In an incident that sent India's security agencies into high alert, a Jet Airways aircraft on its way from Mumbai to Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad in the early hours of Monday after an anonymous letter ordering that the flight be flown straight to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) was found in the business-class toilet by a member of the crew.
When it did an emergency landing in Ah medabad at 5.30 am, the top brass of the security agencies, who had gathered in Mumbai, Delhi and at Ahmedabad airport in readiness to handle a hijack, found the threat to be a hoax.
An anonymous letter that claimed a bomb was planted on a Jet flight was allegedly the handiwork of a 37-year-old businessclass passenger, Birju Kishore Salla, the son of H Kishore Kumar, a prominent jeweller in Mumbai, investigators said.
