A day after the four accused in the rape and murder of a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad were shot and killed by the local police, a video of Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey calling out the culture of celebrating criminals and convicts has gone viral on social media.
Answering a reporter’s question on the encounter killings of Friday, 6 December, Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey said that it was impossible for God, leave alone any man, to confidently guarantee that there would be no more crime.
“This is like a cat and mouse game. Crimes happen, there will be crimes in the future, job of the police is to try and stop it. If the crime has already happened, then to detect it. Can anybody vow that all crime will stop? Even God can’t make promises like that,” he can be heard saying in the video clip.
The top cop goes on to condemn the celebration and welcoming of convicts with garlands saying, “The society as a whole must awaken and fight against the culture of crime, only then there will be change.”
Speaking to a media personnel, the cop said that it was unrealistic to guarantee a crime-free future, also adding that it was the collective responsibility to prevent crime.
“Which man can guarantee that there will be no crime anymore? There won't be crimes in the morning? Here 15, 16, 18-year-olds are consuming liquor, ingesting smack, heroin, getting intoxicated is a way of life. Stopping crime is not just the task of the police. while police is the specific agency responsible for controlling crime but until people don’t wake up, create a atmosphere that doesn’t favour criminals...”.
He also castigated recent incidents of accused rapists and criminals being welcomed and honoured by society.
