Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Brace for Heavy Rains
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are in for widespread rains with a depression over Comorin area likely to intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 hours and into a cyclonic storm later, the regional weather office said on Wednesday.
The depression lay 220 km west-southwest of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and is likely to move northwestwards across Lakshadweep and intensify into a deep depression, S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said.
"It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 48 hours," he told reporters in Chennai.
He forecast widespread rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours, saying heavy rains were likely in areas like Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Madurai.

Orange Warning in Districts of Kerala
On Tuesday, an orange warning was issued for Kerala’s southern districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
Heavy rainfall has been predicted in isolated places in the state in the coming days due to the north east monsoon and also due to the depression on the southern Sri Lankan coast.
While an orange warning has been issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Idukki districts for Wednesday, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts will be under Orange warning on Thursday.
Schools, Colleges to Remain Closed in Parts TN Today
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in 15 districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, 30 October.
All schools and colleges will remain closed in six districts of Tamil Nadu — Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar, Vellore and Ramanathapuram — today due to heavy rainfall.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated, “Cyclone Kyarr lays 980 km west of Mumbai and 1020 km east-northeast of Salalah (Oman). It's very likely move towards Gulf of Aden off south Oman-Yemen coasts during subsequent 3 days. It's very likely to weaken into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by 31 October.”
IMD added, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Rayalseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep; Heavy rainfall at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka.”
'Kyarr' to Bring Rain in Gujarat Before Moving Towards Oman
Super cyclonic storm 'Kyarr' over the Arabian Sea is likely to gradually move towards the Oman coast but would cause rainfall in some parts of Gujarat in next few days, a MeT official said on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also advised fishermen from the state not to venture into the sea for next two days in view of the rough weather conditions.
Kyarr is very likely to maintain the intensity of a super cyclonic storm till Monday evening and weaken gradually thereafter, it said.
"While Gujarat is spared of the super cyclone, it would bring non-seasonal rain at isolated places," IMD's Ahmedabad centre director Jayanta Sarkar said.

Odisha Rain Toll Increases to Six
The toll in the heavy rains in Odisha has mounted to six with three fresh deaths reported from the districts, officials said.
The state has been battered by heavy rains since 23 October under the impact of a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal.
The three fresh deaths were reported from Ganjam, Kendrapara and Mayurbhanj districts since Friday, officials said, reported PTI.

MeT Dept Issues Red Alert for Coastal Districts of Maharashtra, Very Heavy Rains Expected
Cyclonic storm "Kyarr" is likely to bring very heavy to extremely heavy rains in coastal Maharashtra, IMD officials said on Friday, 25 October, prompting Palghar district collector Kailas Shinde to issue a warning to fishermen to not venture into the sea.
In the wake of this cyclone, the MeT department has issued a red alert, indicating 'extremely heavy rainfall' and strong winds, for coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, Doordarshan News reported.

Holiday Declared for Schools and Colleges in Dakshina Kannada
The Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared Friday a holiday for schools and colleges in the coastal district, The News Minute reported.
The decision was taken after a red warning was issued till Saturday in the three coastal districts of Karnataka - Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada - amid continous rainfall over the past week.
"Due to depression in Arabian Sea, a red warning was issued by the IMD for Dakshina Kannada district. There is possibility of cyclone in Arabian Sea and if this intensifies, there could be more rains", read a notification issued by Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Rupesh.
District officials have been asked to be on high alert in the next few days.
Goa: Four Fishermen Rescued, One Missing in Canoe Mishap
Four fishermen were rescued and one is still missing after a canoe capsized in Sal river in South Goa's Mobor village, an official said.
Five fishermen had ventured into the river, despite rough weather warning, when their canoe capsized, the official said, reported PTI.
Red Alert Sounded in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada District
A red alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka in the wake of heavy rains and forecast of possible formation of cyclone Kyarr along the coast in the next two days, official sources said.
The forecast from India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the well-marked low pressure area over east-central Arabian Sea would gradually intensify into a depression anytime and by Friday, the system would start moving in the north-west direction while intensifying further into a cyclone.
The Karnataka State Natural Calamity Monitoring Centre has also asked the public to be cautious, while fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea, reported PTI.
CM Yediyurappa Takes Stock After Rains Kill 13 in Karnataka
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Wednesday directed officials to immediately expedite relief work and not to shy away from duties citing Deepavali holidays, reported PTI.
Holding a video conference with the Deputy Commissioners of the 16 districts, most of them in north Karnataka, Yediyurappa took stock of the situation in the presence of top officials.
"The Chief Minister has issued instructions to provide compensation to the families ofthose deceased and for damaged houses immediately," the ChiefMinister's office said in a statement.
Extremely Heavy Rain Predicted in Coastal K'taka, Goa on Friday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, 23 October, put out a red alert, forecasting `extremely heavy rainfall' over the coastal Konkan and Goa as well as coastal Karnataka for Friday, according to PTI.
The Met department's Mumbai Centre issued the advisory for Konkan, Goa and coastal Karnataka after the signs of intensification of cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea.
The IMD Goa, meanwhile, has issued a red alert for Thursday. It also advised people to stay indoors and asked fishermen not to venture into the sea due to rough weather conditions.
Death Toll in Karnataka Rises to 13, 150 Animals Dead
A Karnataka Government report on the current rain situation in the state on Wednesday, 23 October said that the death toll in Karnataka, due to the heavy rains in south India rose to 13. Apart from 13 people, the report said that the rains have left 150 animals dead till 23 October.
The report also said that parts of North Interior Karnataka - Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri districts and parts of Ballari and Kopal received moderate rain in the past 24 hours, the state's report on the flood situation said, on Wednesday 23 October.
The forecast showed moderate rains to continue, with heavy rains also predicted at isolated places, largely over areas like Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal and Ballari for the next two days.
The report also said that the upper Krishna catchment Basin in Maharashtra has received widespread with moderate rain in the past 24 Hours. According to IMD, this will continue till the next two-three days.
K'taka Govt Orders Sanitation Measures to be Stepped Up Immediately
The government of Karnataka, on Wednesday 23 October, ordered field activities like mosquito control, distribution of halogen tablets and chlorination to be stepped up on immediate basis, amid the heavy rainfall in the region, ANI reported.
District House Officers have also been told to utilise staff from unaffected areas and keep ambulances ready for any emergencies.
The state government has also ordered the District Health Officers of all flood-affected districts to resume activities that were undertaken during recent floods.
IMD Lifts Red Alert from All Districts in Kerala as Rains Reduce
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has lifted the red warning from across Kerala, hours after heavy rains lashed parts of the state. The red warning, that indicates the necessity of immediate action, had been issued in seven districts on Monday, 21 October. Four districts were given a red warning for Tuesday, 21 October but these were lifted later.
On Wednesday, 23 October morning, an orange warning — to be alert and be prepared — is in place for Idukki and Malappuram districts, while green (no warning) or yellow (to watch) warnings are in place for all the other districts. On Tuesday, an orange warning was in place only for Idukki district.
Coastal Andhra Likely to Receive Heavy Rain, IMD Issues Red Alert
Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to receive extremely heavy rain on Wednesday, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of the state, for the next two days. The alert is in place till 8:30 am on 25 October.
"Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain very likely to occur, along with and thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh," the IMD alert for Wednesday was quoted by The News Minute. A similar prediction was made for the state on Thursday.
