Clear Stand on Commission for Fixing Salaries of MPs: SC to Centre
Supreme Court has told the Centre to give a clear stand on the commission by 6 March.
Amid all the noise surrounding the proposal for a permanent commission that will fix salaries of sitting MPs, Supreme Court has told the Centre to give a clear stand on the commission till 6 March, Live Law reported.
The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice J Chelameswar and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said, “Your affidavit doesn’t make the stand clear whether you want a permanent commission for salaries and allowances for the MPs,” Live Law quoted the bench as referring to the affidavit filed by the Centre in September last year.
Senior Advocate Ajit Sinha, representing the Centre, told the bench that the government is willing to set up a commission to decide on the salaries and allowances for the MPs and MLAs. He, however, said that it will take at least a week to make a clear decision.
“Why the Centre always takes the stand that policy matters should be left for Parliament and not to be decided by the court? The Supreme Court asks the government and says that its order on mandatory disclosure of the source of assets by politicians was welcomed by all political parties despite the Centre’s objection,” Live Law further quoted the SC bench.
The bench sought a specific stand on the issue while posting the matter for 6 March.
