The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, has allowed the construction of a railway line through Mahananda National Park in Darjeeling, West Bengal. It asked the state government to issue relevant notifications within two months.

The apex court has said that the line is crucial for Sikkim and has instructed the northeast frontier railway to comply strictly with the conditions and environmental safeguards laid out by the National Board for Wildlife.

The project, which is incomplete because a certain stretch of railway line passes through forest land, was supposed to be ready by December 2015.
