‘PM Doesn’t Respect Tamil Culture’: Rahul Gandhi Launches Campaign
The Assembly elections in the state are scheduled to take place in May.
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi embarked on the party’s campaign trail on Saturday, 23 January. He addressed the rally in Coimbatore and said, “We believe there are multiple cultures and languages,” NDTV reported.
“PM Modi has no respect for culture, language and the people of Tamil Nadu. PM thinks Tamil people and language are subservient," he added, NDTV quoted.
He had earlier taken to Twitter to express that the UPA “will defend and preserve the unique culture of the Tamils against the attacks by Modi government.”

Following a roadshow at Avinashi Road in Coimbatore, the Congress leader addressed a gathering of MSME representatives. He said, “It is the commitment of the UPA government that when we come to power, we will restructure the GST,” ANI reported.
He also iterated that while the ruling government believes in undermining diversity for the sake of efficient growth, he “doesn’t believe in that” and “respects the Tamil language.”
Later in the day, the Congress leader held a road sow in Chinnampalayam village in Coimbatore district, ANI reported. He said, “The PM thinks that once he controls the government of Tamil Nadu, he can control the people. He doesn’t know the history and spirit of the people here.”
He later paid respect to freedom fighter Tiruppur Kumaran at Tiruppur.
Appealing to the public he said, “I do not have a political relationship with Tamil Nadu, I have a family relationship with Tamil Nadu. Mr Narendra Modi does not understand that.”
According to the party itinerary released earlier, Gandhi is also scheduled for interactions with farmers and weavers , NDTV reported.
The Congress leader is setting on the election trail in the southern state for three days, covering five districts in the western region, which include Tiruppur, Erode and Karur.
