1. Protests Over Anitha’s Death Snowball
Protests erupted across Chennai on 5 September over the death of S Anitha, a medical aspirant from Ariyalur district who killed herself on 1 September. For the past few days, there have been agitations across Tamil Nadu, as anger over the 17-year-old’s death has intensified.
Over 200 students from Loyola College took to the streets raising slogans with placards. Actor Rohini and director Vetrimaran were among those who joined the Loyola students expressing solidarity with the cause.

2. Stalin Sharpens Attack on BJP, Dubs Party's Plans a Pipedream
Stepping up the campaign against the BJP-led government at the Centre, DMK working president MK Stalin on 5 September called upon political leaders to bury their differences to fight for social justice.
According to him, the BJP is trying to get a toehold in Tamil Nadu taking advantage of the prevailing confusion in the ruling AIADMK.

3. Groundwater Level Receives a Boost, Thanks to Recent Rain
The groundwater table in several districts have shown considerable improvement, thanks to bountiful rains that had lashed the state in August. Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Theni disticts have shown remarkable increase in the water-level compared to last month.
While half of the districts have recorded a rise in the water table , Kancheepuram topped the list with a jump in the water table by 5.14 metres compared to July, according to the state Ground and Surface Water Resources Data Centre, Water Resources Department.

4. No Clarity on Sasikala Yet
Uncertainty prevails over the proposed action against jailed interim general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK-Amma) VK Sasikala at next week’s meeting of the general council of the unified AIADMK (Amma, PTA).
An indication to this effect was given by Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on 5 September while answering a question on Sasikala’s proposed expulsion from the party. He said it would not be proper to comment on the issue at the present juncture.

5. Railways to Take up Cleanliness Drive
As part of an intensive drive to ensure cleanliness on trains and station premises, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani has called for a sanitation strategy for immediate action. Some of the actionable items are creating awareness on the use of bio-toilets, washing trains/stations at night, garbage disposal en route and at destination points, and display of anti-littering rules.
Lohani’s initiative comes days after he took over as the chairman. The Board has authorised its frontline staff to rope in the expertise of Eureka Forbes, one of the leading health and hygiene brands of the country, for the sanitation programme.

6. Mother, Baby Electrocuted
A 23-year-old mother and her four-month-old baby were electrocuted in their house on Wall Tax Road on 5 September after the woman accidentally touched a table fan kept near her.
On the fateful night, Aruna allegedly tried to turn the table fan towards Divan. Accidentally, she touched the electrical wire and was electrocuted. Divan, who was sleeping close by, was also electrocuted.

7. Woman Kills 'Abusive' Son With a Boulder
A 60-year-old woman reportedly killed her abusive son by smashing his head with a boulder while he was asleep, on 5 September morning. According to the police, R Senthil, 40, was residing in Anbu Nagar, Thiruverkadu, with his mother Saraswati, his wife, and three young children.
Senthil was unemployed and an alcoholic. His mother worked as a domestic help in a local restaurant and ran the household. The two would constantly get into arguments. Saraswati alleged that Senthil used to hurl filthy abuses at her and beat her up almost every day.
