Dilli Walas Own Highest Number of Cars, but Mumbaikars Drive More
Delhi has the highest number of car owners. But Mumbai is adding 172 vehicles to its roads daily.
Although Delhi has the highest number of private vehicle owners, Mumbai has the maximum number of vehicles on road per kilometre at any given moment, reports The Times of India.
The number of car owners in Delhi surpasses the ones in Mumbai by a wide margin. However, Mumbai is adding vehicles at the rate of 172 cars daily.
This means that the number of vehicles in either of the cities is not going to reduce, and its effect on pollution is definitely a cause of concern.
The Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) emitted from vehicles, and burning garbage, wood etc., makes pollution a direct threat to our respiratory systems.
Is Vehicle Density a Measure of Pollution?
But does having more vehicles on the road make Mumbai more polluted than Delhi? Not necessarily.
A Rediff report from January 2016 claims that vehicle density is not directly proportional to the level of PM 2.5.
The PM 2.5 level in Delhi stood at 198 while Mumbai only reached 77, even with the mentioned number of vehicles on the road.
Thus, the solution for the ever-growing problem of pollution does not exist solely because of vehicles. This is not to say that vehicular emissions aren’t a part of the problem. But unless and until all-round efforts are made to reduce all forms of pollution, satisfactory results may remain elusive.
