1. Reporter Attacked by Six People at Grant Rd
A journalist working with the Times Now news channel was attacked by six people near his house in Grant Road around midnight on Saturday. The victim, Herman A Gomes, sustained several injuries, including a cut below his right eye, even as one of his friends, Cavell D'Costa, who was with him, escaped with minor bruises.
Gomes said they were returning after dinner from Bandra, and had reached the lane near his house on August Kranti Marg, when they were attacked by the accused.

2. Shivaji Memorial: Govt Asks L&T to Start Work Minus Technical Panel Nod
Even as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial project is yet to get the technical panel’s nod for its revised design, the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Maharashtra government has asked Larsen & Toubro (L&T), contractor for the project, to start work from October 19. With this, the project deadline has been extended by almost seven and a half months and its cost has shot up by Rs 643 crore before the commencement of work.
Sources said L&T was asked on October 12 to commence work from October 19. The move comes after the Mumbai Port Trust gave its NOC with certain conditions for reclamation work. The contractor is likely to start reclamation work immediately, said an official.

3. Fishermen Raise Alarm Over Building on Beach
A massive cement concrete building which has come up right in the middle of Mahim beach, commonly called Mahim Causeway (reti bunder) on a 51 sq m plot of land has met with stiff opposition from the local fishing community.
The said the land is owned by the BMC, according to the property card (document of property ownership), and as per the Development Plan (DP) of 2034, it is reserved as a fish and net “drying yard’’ for fishermen.

4. Cambata Workers Call Off Hunger Strike After State Govt Intervenes
Social activist Anjali Damania, who has been on a hunger strike since October 10 demanding the release of salaries of 2,700 workers of the now defunct Cambata Aviation Private Limited, called it off after the state government accepted their demands.
Damania and workers of Cambata Aviation, a ground handling agency at Mumbai airport, have been protesting at Sahar village in Andheri, demanding that the workers, left in the lurch after the company folded up in August 2016, be paid their dues.

5. Rajasthan Cops’ Killers Nabbed at Dadar Station
Two criminals who allegedly shot dead a station house officer (SHO) and a constablein Fatehpur, Rajasthan, last week have been caught in Mumbai.
Mumbai crime branch’s unit-3 picked up Ajay Choudhary and Jagdeep Dhankar at Dadar station on Sunday and handed them over to the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad.

6. Woman on Matrimonial Site Dupes Mumbai Bank Executive of Rs 23 Lakh
An executive working with a leading multi-national bank accused a woman he met on a matrimonial website of allegedly duping him of Rs 23 lakh.
The 31-year-old, who is an assistant vice-president at the Powai branch of the bank, told police that he met one Radhika Dixit on a matchmaking website in August 2017 and exchanged phone numbers with her.
Dixit, the police said, claimed to be an HR professional in a leading insurance firm in Mumbai. Police said Dixit asked the executive to gift her an Apple iPhone 7 for her birthday in August last year.

7. Open State Board System in 2 Months
Students torn between academics and artistic pursuits might soon get some support from the state. Education and Culture Minister Vinod Tawde said on Sunday that the department was planning to introduce an “open board” system from December, which will allow students from Std V, VIII and X to practise their art or sport full-time.
These students would be eligible to appear for exams without having to come to school.
