The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday, 8 April, issued notices to the Police Commissioner of Mumbai and Maharashtra's Director General of Police over the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl.
The child had gone missing on 4 April from a slum in Juhu, and her body was found in the drainage chamber of a public toilet in Vile Parle, two days later.
The Mumbai Police later in the day arrested the accused, 35-year-old Vadivelu Chintambi Devendra, from his residence, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya said, reported Scroll.in.
The accused was released from jail last year after he finished his sentence for raping a minor girl in 2013.
According to the media report, carried on Sunday, the mother of the victim has stated that the girl had gone to get a packet of tea after which she disappeared.
A missing complaint was lodged with the details about the location and uniform she was wearing.
