Massive Fire Breaks Out at Mumbai's Goregaon, Killing Seven & Injuring Over 50

A raging fire engulfed a multi-storey residential building in Mumbai's Goregaon in the wee hours of Friday, 6 October.

The toll: At least seven people have lost their lives in the fire, according to a report by news agency PTI.

  • Around 51 people suffered injuries, with five in critical condition.

  • Some of the injured are reportedly undergoing medical treatment at Seven Hills Hospital.

Of note: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased victims and added that all those wounded in the fire will be treated at the state government's expenses.

What they're saying: "Our family members and relatives were there. My aunt has died. A short circuit occurred at around 1.30 am and then the fire spread... The fire spread to the 7th floor... From our family, one dead body is with them, they said they will hand it over in an hour...," the relative of a victim who died in the fire told news agency ANI.

  • "The incident is quite unfortunate. A committee will be set up to probe it. The Maharashtra government will bear the expenses of treatment of all the injured people. The primary report says that there was a clothes and scrap godown on the ground floor where the fire broke out," state Tourism Minister MP Lodha told news agency PTI after meeting the victims being treated at the city's Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital.

"Pained by the loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Mumbai's Goregaon. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
