Amid widespread rallies protesting the grotesque rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir, the Haryana police on Sunday, 15 April, discovered the body of a 9-year-old in a canal near Rohtak.
According to ANI, the body was recovered by the police – found stuffed in a green bag – in a decomposed condition, with the right hand missing. Officials suspect that the victim was killed at least five days ago.
An NDTV report states that the case was brought to the police’s attention after they received information on a ‘suspicious-looking bag’.
Speaking to ANI, the investigation officer Devi Singh said:
The identity of the victim is yet unknown, and the body has been sent for post-mortem. The police is currently investigating the case, and have registered a case against unknown persons.
A similar incident surfaced on Sunday in Surat, when the police discovered the mutilated body of a 11-year-old, with 86 injury marks on her body.
Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said that 1,200 posters have been posted across the city to find the girl’s kin, and that the case has been handed over to the crime branch.
