3 Arrested in After Drugs Worth 50 Lakh Seized in Bengal

The West Bengal police on Tuesday, 14 August, arrested three people in West Bengal’s Murshidabad and seized 1.5 kilos of heroine worth rupees 50 lakh. Further investigations are underway.

18 Injured After a Moderate Earthquake Jolts Southwest China

Eighteen people were injured after a moderate earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities have said.

The quake damaged over 6,000 homes and affected more than 48,000 residents in Tonghai and Huaning counties and in the district of Jiangchuan, all administered by the city of Yuxi, the provincial civil affairs department said in a statement.

Rupee Recovers from Record Lows Amid Turkish 'Lira' Crisis

The Indian rupee rebounded from record lows on Tuesday, 14 August as the contagion from the economic crisis in Turkey remained relatively contained in developed markets overnight. The local currency opened 0.2 percent higher to 69.78 against the US dollar on Tuesday.

Yesterday, it fell as much as 1.6 percent, the most since September 2013, to close at 69.93 versus the dollar. The Indian currency has been the worst performer in Asia this year.

Indian Rupee Hits Record Low of 70 per Dollar

Indian rupee touched a record low of 70.07 on Tuesday, 14 August.

The rupee fell as much as 1.6 percent on Monday, the most since September 2013, and closed at 69.93 versus the dollar.

The Indian currency has been the worst performer in Asia this year.

Speaking to ANI, Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg said, “nothing to worry at this stage. Rupee is depreciating due to external factors which may ease as we go forward.”

Madras HC Transfers All Violence Cases During Anti- Sterlite Protests to CBI

Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday, 14 August has transferred all cases pertaining to the violence/police firing during the anti- Sterlite protests in Tuticorin to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Back in May 22 when thousands of people were marching towards the Collectorate, to submit a petition to shutdown Sterlite, the police had opened fire.

At least 13 were killed and 200 injured.

19 Dead Due to Heavy Rains in Himachal Pradesh

A five-year-old boy drowned in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district this morning, taking the death toll in rain-related incidents in the state to 19 in the last two days, an official said.

At least 18 people have died in various parts of the state during the incessant rains since Sunday, 12 August evening.

Interim relief was distributed by the district administrations to the affected families, a state official had said.

Amarnath Yatra Suspended Due to Heavy Rains

The Amarnath Yatra was suspended for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, 14 July from Jammu city due to inclement weather, officials said.

The yatra has been suspended from Bagwatinagar base camp in Jammu due to heavy rains and bad weather conditions resulting in closure of the highway, the officials told PTI.

Mumbai Crime Branch Bust Gambling Racket, Rs 16 Seized

The Crime Branch raided a 5-star-hotel on Tuesday, 14 July and busted a gambling racket where 42 people were involved. Police have seized more than Rs 16 lakh and whisky worth more than a lakh.

All the 42 people were involved in gambling and five among them are bookies. Investigations are currently underway.
