Four Arrested in Bank Fraud

Police have arrested four members of a gang involved in cloning of debit, credit cards and withdrawing money from the car holders' bank accounts, an official said on Wednesday, 8 January.

Acting on a specific-tip off, Unit 8 of the Mumbai Crime Branch laid a trap at an ICICI Bank ATM centre on Andheri-Kurla Road and arrested the four who were in a car, the official said. The accused were identified as Ritesh Agrawal (27), Haider Shaikh (23), Rajesh Gouda (35) and Umesh Lokare (25), he said.

They were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act, the official said.

A special court on Wednesday, 8 January, allowed the CBI to submit a supplementary extradition request against fugitive economic offender Nirav Modi to the concerned authorities in London, where the diamantaire is residing presently.

The CBI on Wednesday, 8 Janury, filed an application before the special court seeking for the supplementary extradition request to be allowed to be sent to London in keeping with the fresh evidence submitted against Modi in the agency's supplementary charge sheet.

Mumbai: Woman Hit by a Local Train While Walking on Tracks

A 28-year-old woman walking along a rail track with her earphones plugged in died after being hit by a speeding local train near Kalyan station, railway police said on Thursday, 9 January.

Priyanka Gandhi Targets Modi Govt

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday, 9 January, attacked the Modi government over the recent economic growth estimates, saying the Centre should have given maximum attention to improving economy but the matter has been put in "cold storage" by it.

Her attack comes after official data showed that India's GDP growth is seen dipping to an 11-year low of 5 per cent in the current fiscal, mainly due to poor showing by manufacturing and construction sectors.

ED Attaches Over Rs 2,500-Cr Assets of Haryana-Based SRS Group

According to the ED, assets worth over Rs 2,500 crore have been attached in connection with a money laundering and fraud case against Haryana-based SRS group.

A provisional order for attachment of these properties has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The group and its promoters have been accused of making fraudulent promises to investors of giving high returns in the guise of investments in real estate units like shops, plots, flats and apartments among others.

Mumbai: Two Men Arrested for Extorting Money by Posing as RTI Activists

Two men have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a sculptor in suburban Santacruz by posing as Right to Information (RTI) activists.

The accused, Dinesh Singh and Ramesh Pardeshi, were arrested by Vakola Police late on Wednesday, 8 January, night based on a complaint lodged by Mangesh Bhagat, an official said.

The duo demanded Rs 20,000 from Bhagat alleging that he was carrying out structural changes in his residence without the necessary permissions.

Massive Explosion in Bengal's Naihati as Firecrackers Go off While Being Defused

An enormous mushroom cloud went up several metres high as firecrackers, seized by police, went off while being defused on the banks of Ganga in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Thursday, shattering window panes of houses even on the other bank of the river -- Chinsurah in Hooghly district.

Official sources said the explosion happened in the district's Naihati town when police were defusing a large quantity of firecrackers they had seized from illegal manufacturing units in the area.

4 Students Injured After School Bus Overturns in MP

Four students were injured after their school bus overturned near Rajpur town in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, a police official said.

The bus was carrying nearly 25 students of a private school when the mishap occurred, the official said.

"The bus turned turtle near Jalgaun Fate as the driver lost over the vehicle, which was being driven at a high speed," Rajpur police station in-charge, Anil Bamania said.

Four children suffered injuries in the mishap and they were admitted to a hospital in Rajpur, he added.

Two tents were destroyed in a minor fire on Thursday morning at the ongoing 'Rann Utsav' in Tent City, a famous tourist destination in Gujarat's Kutch district, a fire official said.

ED Attaches Over Rs 2,500-cr Assets of Haryana-based SRS Group

Assets worth over Rs 2,500 crore have been attached in connection with a money laundering and fraud case against Haryana-based SRS group, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Thursday.

“Movable and immovable assets like land, real estate projects, commercial projects, residential houses, a school, cinema hall, balances in bank accounts and fixed deposits totalling to Rs 2,510.82 crore of the SRS Group, its promoters, their family members and associate companies have been attached,” the agency said in a statement

Eighteen UN troops and two civilians were wounded on Thursday in a mortar attack on a military base in northern Mali, a UN official said, in fresh violence in the war-torn West African country.

Olivier Salgado, the spokesperson for the UN mission in Mali, said the toll was "preliminary." Mali has been struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency that erupted in the north in 2012, and which has claimed thousands of military and civilian lives since.

Centre Withdraws VIP Security Cover of TN Deputy CM, Stalin

The Union government has removed the central security cover of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam and DMK leader M K Stalin, officials said on Thursday.

They said while Paneerselvam had a smaller 'Y+' cover of central paramilitary commandos, Stalin had a larger 'Z+' protection.

The security cover of these two politicians has been taken off from the central security list after a threat assessment review was made by central security agencies and approved by the Union home ministry, they said.

Congress leader and Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat said on Thursday that he had told Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray that he did not want the post of guardian minister of Kalhapur.

Talking to PTI, Thorat said he had other responsibilities as the chief of the state Congress and leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

"We got 11 guardian minister posts in the power sharing agreement with the NCP and the Shiv Sena. I have other responsibilities. I had already declared that I do not wish to be a guardian minister. I have told it to CM," he said.

AP CM to Appear in CBI Court in Disproportionate Assets Case on Jan 10

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to appear in the special court of CBI in Hyderabad on Friday to face the ongoing trial in the disproportionate assets cases against him.

The special court judge on January 3 directed Jagan to appear in person for the trial, rejecting the latter's plea for an exemption.

This will be Jagan's first appearance in court for the trial after he assumed charge as Chief Minister on May 30, 2019.

IAF Chief Visits Eastern Air Command, Reviews Operational Preparedness

Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on Thursday wrapped a two-day visit to the Eastern Air Command (EAC) during which he reviewed its operational preparedness, officials said.

He visited vital air bases and combat units operating at these locations.

"Besides reviewing the operational preparedness at these bases, the Chief of Air Staff met local commanders and interacted with the station personnel. Delhi on Top in Terms of Crime With Over 2 Lakh Cases in 2018: NCRB

Delhi topped the crime chart over 18 other metropolitan cities, with over two lakh such incidents reported in the national capital in 2018, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

A total of 2,25,977 incidents of crime were reported in the national capital in 2018, followed by Mumbai (40,757), Chennai (20,160) and Kolkata (19,682 incidents of crime).

Top US Diplomat to Visit India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

The Trump administration's point person for South and Central Asia, Alice G Wells, will visit India next week for a series of bilateral meetings and the Raisina Dialogue in Delhi, officials here said.

Wells will travel to India, from January 15-18, to attend the Raisina Dialogue, the State Department said and added that she will be in Islamabad from 19-22 January.
