US Removes India from Its Currency Monitoring List
The Trump administration on Tuesday, 28 May, removed India from its currency monitoring list of major trading partners, citing certain developments and steps being taken by New Delhi which address some of its major concerns.
Switzerland is the other nation that has been removed by the US from its currency monitoring list which among others include China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.
“India has been removed from the monitoring list in this report, having met only one out of three criteria – a significant bilateral surplus with the US – for two consecutive reports,” the Treasury Department said in its latest semi-annual report on macroeconomic and foreign exchange policies of major trading partners of the US sent to the Congress.

India has moved up one place to rank 43rd most competitive economy in the world on the back of its robust economic growth, a large labour force and its huge market size, while Singapore has toppled the US to grab the top position, a global study showed.
The IMD World Competitiveness Rankings, established in 1989, incorporate 235 indicators from each of the 63 ranked economies to evaluate their ability to foster an environment where enterprises can achieve sustainable growth, generate jobs and increase welfare for its citizens.

Three Indians Charged in Million-Dollar Fraud Scheme In US
Three Indians have been charged in a million-dollar fraud scheme in the US in which they remotely accessed computers belonging to senior citizens without authorisation, caused the machines to malfunction and lured the victims' into purchasing phony computer repair services.
Gunjit Malhotra (30), Gurjeet Singh (22) and Jas Pal (54), have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and one count of conspiracy to access a protected computer in furtherance of fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman told PTI.
Tornadoes in US' Ohio Leave at Least One Dead, Widespread Damage
Ohio residents inspected destroyed homes and debris-strewn streets on Tuesday after powerful tornadoes ripped through the US state overnight, killing at least one person and causing widespread damage and power outages.
One twister that barreled through the city of Dayton left 80,000 people without power as day broke, the city's assistant fire chief Nicholas Hosford told ABC News.
"We have homes flattened, entire apartment complexes destroyed, businesses throughout our community where walls have collapsed," Hosford said.
"I don't know that any community that is fully prepared for this type of devastation," he added.
That twister was one of many - up to 52, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration - that touched down Monday night and roared through eight US states.

Court Acquits 12 People in the Muzaffarnagar Riots Case
A local court in Muzaffarnagar has acquitted 12 people due to lack of evidence in connection with the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case.
Additional District Sessions Judge Sanjive Kumar Tiwari acquitted them under sections 395 (dacoity) and 436 (arson) of the IPC on Tuesday, 28 May, in the riots case.
According to prosecution, an SIT had filed charge sheet against 13 people under sections 495 and 436 of the IPC. One person died during the pendency of the case.
During hearing, three witnesses, including complainant Mohammed Suleman, turned hostile and did not support the prosecution.
It was alleged that a mob set houses on fire and looted property during riots at Iisadh village in the district on 7 September 2013.

US National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Wednesday Iran was "almost certainly" behind attacks on ships off the UAE coast earlier this month.
The four ships, including two Saudi tankers, were attacked by "naval mines almost certainly from Iran", Bolton told a press conference in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi.

ED To Take Possession of AJL Land in Panchkula After PMLA Authority Approval
The ED will soon take possession of a land worth Rs 64.93 crore in Panchkula, which was allotted to the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) by the Haryana government in 2005, after a quasi-judicial authority recently approved its order, the agency said on Wednesday, 29 May.
The central probe agency has issued a provisional attachment order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on 1 December last year for attaching the plot.
"...Since, the value of plot fraudulently allotted to AJL has represented proceeds of crime, the ED has attached plot under the PMLA act,” the ED had said in a statement.

IAF Chief's Squadron to Be First Rafale Combat Aircraft Unit
The first Rafale combat aircraft would be inducted into the Indian Air Force's 'Golden Arrows' 17 Squadron which was commanded by Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa during the Kargil war in 1999.
"The first unit to receive the Rafale combat aircraft would be the 17 Squadron which was earlier located in Bhatinda in Punjab and will now be shifted to Ambala in Haryana," IAF sources told ANI.
'16 Terrorist Camps Active Across the LoC'
Indian intelligence agencies have received inputs that 16 terror training camps are active inside Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir where terrorists are being readied for infiltration into the Kashmir valley.
Army sources said that the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed has dealt with a severe blow after the Pulwama attack as it is not receiving any support from the local youth in the Kashmir valley as its leadership and cadre have been eliminated in a targeted campaign by the security forces.
"There are 16 terrorist training camps which have been activated in the last few months as per the reports received from intelligence agencies. More camps are in the process of being activated for the infiltration season," Army sources told ANI.

China Steps up Threat to Deprive US of Rare Earths
Chinese state media on Wednesday dangled the threat of cutting exports of rare earths to the United States as a counter-strike in the trade war, potentially depriving Washington of a key resource used to make everything from smartphones to military hardware.
The warning is the latest salvo in a dispute that has intensified since President Donald Trump ramped up tariffs against China and moved to blacklist telecom giant Huawei earlier this month, while trade talks have apparently stalled.
Beijing had already dropped a big hint that rare earths could be in the firing line by showing images last week of President Xi Jinping visiting a rare earths factory in Ganzhou, central China.

Technical Snag Affects Metro Movement in Delhi
A technical snag affected the movement of trains between Dilshad Garden and Shahdara, Delhi Metro officials said on Wednesday.
"Due to a technical issue, train services will be run in the following loops temporarily - between Rithala and Shahdara and between Shaheed Sthal and Dilshad Garden.
"There will be single line train movement between Shahdara and Dilshad Garden," Delhi Metro Rail Corporation posted on Twitter.
According to a senior official, train services were affected due to OHE (overhead electricity) issue on the Dilshad Garden-Shahdara section.
"The Dilshad Garden-Shahdara section trains are being operated on a single line. Rectification work is underway," he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has asked the department of women and child development to submit the plan by 15 June.
"It is a matter of great pride that a large number of workforce in the Delhi government consists of women. However, work life balance for such women, especially working mothers, is not easy and it is the responsibility of employer organisations to improve working conditions of women.
